Job Purpose

To provide high-quality, tailored support for a pupil with identified Special Educational Needs, including specific learning difficulties and attention-related challenges. The Teaching Assistant will work closely with the class teacher and wider school staff to promote access to learning, emotional wellbeing, and independence, in line with the pupil’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Experience supporting children with SEND, particularly those with Dyslexia, ADHD traits, or emotional regulation needs.
  • Strong understanding of inclusive education and differentiated learning approaches.
  • Ability to build positive, trusting relationships with pupils and staff.
  • Skilled in using visual supports, structured routines, and positive behaviour strategies.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and observational skills.
  • Flexible, patient, and empathetic approach to supporting learning and behaviour.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Training in emotional literacy, therapeutic or nurture-based approaches, or assistive technology.
  • Experience delivering small-group or one-to-one interventions.
  • Familiarity with EHCPs and experience of multi-agency working.

Key Responsibilities

Working under the direction of the class teacher and within the framework of an agreed education plan:

  • Support the pupil’s access to the curriculum through differentiated and personalised learning strategies.
  • Promote focus, engagement, and participation during lessons using visual aids, structured routines, and positive reinforcement.
  • Assist in developing literacy and numeracy skills through targeted, scaffolded activities.
  • Encourage the use of assistive technologies and alternative methods of recording to support communication and written work.
  • Foster emotional resilience, confidence, and self-regulation through positive relationships and structured support.
  • Encourage positive peer interactions and inclusive play to support social development.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff and the SENCo to monitor progress, adapt strategies, and contribute to review meetings.
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold the school’s safeguarding and child protection procedures at all times.
