Academic Tutor: Maths Specialism job summary

We are looking for an Academic Tutor specialising in Mathematics to support individuals and groups of students to enable access to learning, progress within the subject and achieve academic success. The role includes supporting teachers in whole class lessons when not administering their own 1:1 or group sessions.

The successful candidate will need to have excellent organisational skills, fantastic communication skills, good subject knowledge and curriculum knowledge in this subject area.

This role is suitable for graduates with a degree in the subject area, looking to work in a school in preparation for starting teacher training.

Hours are 8:00am to 4:00pm with some before and after school sessions. You will also be asked to provide some sessions within the school holiday period.

Main Areas of Responsibility

Progress of Students in 1:1, small group and whole class

  • To deliver programmes of study to small groups of students (ideally between 1 and 3) in 1:1 setting
  • To ensure all students identified for intervention are given every opportunity to meet their examination and / or progress targets;
  • To liaise with parents regarding the attendance, progress and attitude of designated students, reporting to the Head of Subject weekly;
  • Maintain records of students' progress in relation to their examination targets;
  • To complete the relevant marking and feedback for students that clearly identifies what they need to improve in order to meet their targets;
  • Use the Academy's behaviour management strategies to contribute to creating a purposeful learning environment;
  • To highlight individual student's learning needs to the class teacher and agree how he/she will be supported in each lesson;
  • Assist teacher in evaluating identified students' progress through agreed assessment activities;
  • Monitor identified students in lessons. Providing teachers with feedback on participation and progress;
  • Support identified students to engage with the learning objectives set for the lesson;
  • Plan with teachers the role they will take in the lesson, preparing resources that meet the students' needs and interests;
  • Under the direction of the Assistant Principal / Head of Department to undertake such other tasks that may be required to further the efficient running of the Academy, commensurate with the level of the post holder;
  • Support identified students in tutor group time, with other activities;
  • To assist other students in the class group as appropriate;
  • Run homework clubs, where appropriate;
  • To invigilate examinations and act as reader or scribe as requested.
  • Tracking of student's progress through strategies like question level analysis and preparing intervention that supports the improvement in identified areas
  • To ensure targeted students are well prepared for their examinations

Qualifications & Experience

Qualifications, Knowledge & Training

  • Relevant qualifications that help demonstrate evidence at A Level or undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in English, Maths or Science.
  • Excellent numeracy/literacy skills.
  • Some knowledge of strategies in working with young people with challenging behaviours
  • Knowledge of some of the social issues facing students from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Awareness of Health and Safety issues in the workplace.
  • Full working knowledge of relevant polices/codes of practice/legislation
  • Working knowledge of national curriculum and other relevant learning programmes
  • Understanding of principles of child development and learning processes and in particular, barriers to learning
  • Ability to plan effective actions for students at risk of underachieving
  • Understand range of support services/providers
  • Ability to self-evaluate learning needs and actively seek learning opportunities
  • Ability to relate well to children and adults
  • Work constructively as part of a team, understanding classroom roles and responsibilities and your own position within these
  • Shows a personal commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare and rights of young people.
  • Appreciates the significance of safeguarding and interprets this for all individual children and young people whatever their circumstances
  • Can demonstrate an ability to contribute towards a safe environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills both in working relationship with young students and in forming effective professional relationships with a wide range of contacts including parents and families
  • Enthusiasm, drive and a love for the job
  • Ability to form and maintain appropriate relationships and personal boundaries with children and young people

Experience

  • Experience of working directly with young people in an education or training environment, supporting the learning of students.
  • Experience of establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with a range of stakeholders, at all levels.
  • Experience of managing and being responsible for own workload.

  • Good literacy and numeracy skills,
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, with an excellent standard of written and spoken English.
  • Good administrative and organisational skills.
  • Ability to interest, encourage, motivate and engage children
  • Ability to work as part of a team; working effectively with people across a wide range of levels and responsibilities.
  • Computer literate – must have good ICT skills including a working knowledge of MS packages e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel etc, as well as using and updating records and databases.
  • Ability to work using own initiative, exercising good judgement where unsupervised.
  • Flexibility of approach to work.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality; having tact and diplomacy where necessary.
