What skills and experience we're looking for
We are looking for a suitably qualified teacher to be responsible for the teaching of students within our SEMH base. The students you will be working with may have an EHCP and/or have diagnosed or undiagnosed SEND. This is an exciting opportunity to join our school as we expand our Inclusion Team and to be part of the targeted support for students struggling to cope within mainstream at present (but unable to meet thresholds for specialist/alternative provision). We are open to applications from staff currently working in primary, middle and specialist or alternative school settings.
You will need to have excellent knowledge and understanding of child and adolescent development, the barriers to learning which social, emotional and mental health needs can present and be able to draw upon a range of strategies and interventions to overcome such barriers. You will also have knowledge of current national SEND policy and practice, the requirements for Safeguarding and Child Protection and have understanding of trauma-informed practice. You will ideally be an English and/or Maths specialist or have experience teaching interventions in these subject areas (either in primary, middle or secondary) to students struggling to access the secondary curriculum due to literacy weaknesses or learning gaps.
What the school offers its staff
We can offer you the support of a vibrant, driven senior team, a fantastic modern building, excellent CPD opportunities and great students to work with.
We are a highly aspirational, truly comprehensive 11-18 secondary school of around 1000 students in North Tyneside. Our vision is ambitious and unapologetic: we are creating change in order to be the school of first choice in the local area. We are passionate about equality, fairness and our students achieving the very best they can. We are proud of our traditional values: kindness, integrity, determination, manners, ambition, and positivity. We are a fully inclusive school, in a wonderful modern building, that is dedicated to both supporting and challenging all members of our diverse community and to developing the potential in all our students, regardless of their starting points. Ours is a calm and orderly work environment, based upon high standards of behaviour and an ethos of trust and care. We were rated Good by Ofsted in June 2022 and are due to be oversubscribed again next year.
Further details about the role
Overall, we are looking for candidates who:
Are excellent teachers and ethical professionals, with values and integrity at the heart of any philosophy and outlook rather than ego or status.
Have excellent communication and people skills alongside emotional intelligence.
Understand what excellent teaching and learning looks like.
Are passionate about the transformative power of education, care about young people, and are willing to challenge complacency in order to ensure the best possible outcomes for all learners.
Commitment to safeguarding
Longbenton High School is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children and young people, and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
