Purpose of the job

Support the Preschool Manager:

Assist in promoting the learning and personal development of the children to enable them to make the best of the educational opportunities available to them within a safe environment.

Support Lunchtime Sessions:

To enable children to enjoy their lunchtimes in a safe environment.

Support for the children:

  • aid learning as effectively as possible, 1:1 and in groups

  • engage and stimulate children using a variety of techniques and resources

  • ensure children are able to use equipment and materials provided

  • motivate and encourage children as required by providing levels of individual attention, reassurance and help with educational activities as appropriate to their needs

  • be vigilant and aware of dangers to ensure the children's’ safety at all times

  • use praise, commentary and assistance to encourage children to concentrate and stay on task

  • liaise with the manager and SENDCO and other professionals about education and healthcare plans (EHCPs), contributing to the planning and delivery as appropriate

  • provide additional nurture to individuals when requested by the manager, SENDCO and/or Senior members of staff

  • consistently and effectively implement agreed behaviour management strategies

  • help to make appropriate resources to support children

  • establish supportive relationships with children

  • promote the acceptance and inclusion of children, encouraging children to interact with each other in an appropriate and acceptable manner

  • monitor children's’ responses to the learning activities and, where appropriate, modify or adapt the activities as agreed with the preschool manager to achieve the intended learning outcomes

  • give positive encouragement, feedback and praise to reinforce and sustain the children's’ efforts and develop self reliance and self esteem

  • assess and report on children's’ activities under the direction of the manager

  • support children in developing social skills both in and out of the classroom

  • provide regular feedback on the children's’ learning and behaviour to the manager/SENDCO, including feedback on the effectiveness of any behaviour strategies adopted

  • under the direction of the manager /SENDCO, carry out and report on systematic observations of children to gather evidence of their knowledge, understanding and skills upon which the manager makes judgements about their stage of development

  • when working with children understand and use group dynamics to promote group effectiveness and support group and individual performance

  • where appropriate, to know and apply positive handling techniques

  • contribute towards reviews of the children's’ progress as appropriate

Support for the preschool:

  • know and apply policies on Child Protection, Health and Safety, Behaviour, Teaching and Learning, Equal Opportunities etc

  • where appropriate, develop a relationship to foster links between home and preschool, and to keep the preschool informed of relevant information

  • be aware of confidential issues linked to home/child/manager/school

  • comply with legal and organisational requirements for maintaining the health, safety and security of yourself and others in the learning environment

  • take part in training activities offered by the preschool or trust to further knowledge and skills of working with a children

  • be willing to support playground/break time supervision e.g. educational games

  • undertake other duties which may arise from time to time, to be agreed with the Preschool Manger
