What skills and experience we're looking for

The governors of The Sherwood School are seeking to employ a highly motivated and enthusiastic person to undertake a Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship in our Early Years Unit from September 2024.

This apprenticeship is suitable for anyone looking to start their career in the Education sector. To complete the Level 3 Teaching Assistant Standard, you will have completed classroom observations, 1-2-1 and group professional discussions, knowledge-based assignments and collected examples of your practice in your role as a Teaching Assistant.

At the end of your apprenticeship you’ll achieve a nationally recognised qualification, (Level 3 Teaching Assistant Standard) as well as valuable work experience, that will provide you with the best chance possible of being offered a full-time Teaching Assistant position.

We are interested in meeting applicants with a true interest in all children and a passion for enabling and empowering them to learn and achieve. You should be motivated, well-organised, interested in developing your skills and keen to contribute to the wider life of the school.

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • The ability to encourage and communicate effectively with children.
  • Effective communication and team working skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills

What the school offers its staff

We provide a warm and friendly working environment with high staff morale and a commitment to developing our staff to achieve their full potential.

We are an ‘Inner London’ school and we serve a culturally diverse community in Mitcham with happy, confident and polite children. We aim to promote the wellbeing and safety of children and to ensure they are offered the best opportunities that we can provide. We were graded as ‘Good’ in our most recent OFSTED inspection in July 2023: ‘This is a school where pupils are happy and where staff support their safety. Pupils’ rights and responsibilities are at the heart of this community.’

We are a UNICEF Rights respecting Gold school where children enjoy learning and achieving in the context of a broad and balanced curriculum, with a special emphasis on the expressive arts, music and Philosophy for Children. This has also been acknowledged in our last Ofsted report: ‘Leaders have put in place a curriculum which includes a wide range of subjects. The approach for all subjects’ matches the ambition of the national curriculum. It is also designed to meet the needs of the school community.’

We offer:

  • A friendly and supportive working environment
  • Excellent professional development opportunities
  • Dedicated and supportive staff and governors
  • The support of a committed School Leadership Team

Commitment to safeguarding

At The Sherwood, we want every child's experience to be a happy and positive one and for them to make the best possible progress in all aspects of learning. Our focus is on making sure our pupils have a firm foundation in the core areas of Maths and English - and on making sure they have fun whilst doing so!

Our aim is to promote the development of children's confidence through the Expressive Arts. Music is at the heart of our school, with every child learning the rudiments of music through singing, movement and instrumental lessons provided by specialists from Merton Music Foundation and Artis.

Through our creative and language-rich curriculum, our work as a Gold Rights Respecting school, as a Philosophy for Children school, and in our sporting and House activities, we ensure every day brings new and exciting challenges.
