Art & Design Technician job summary
MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB
- To facilitate the resource needs of the Art & Design Department, including preparing materials, ordering stock and mounting work whilst also being responsible for display throughout the school.
- To provide administrative and organisational support to staff and work as part of a team and individually to inspire students.
- To contribute to the overall ethos, work and aims of the school
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES of this post
1. Art and Design Resources and Equipment
- Day-to-day management of the budget for Art and Design Equipment and Resources, including maintaining stock levels, ordering, checking invoices against deliveries and distributing stock to the specialist rooms.
- Ensuring that equipment and furniture is properly maintained and that its access is controlled and monitored.
- Preparing Art ‘packs’ for student purchase, including liaising with Finance for ParentPay.
- Keeping abreast of new resources and equipment available, including new technologies, and their relevance to Art and Design activities; making recommendations for procurement.
- Health and Safety standards throughout the Art and Design and Photography Department, including risk assessments.
2. Facilitating Teaching and Learning for Art and Design and Photography
- Storing and preparing clay for class projects and examinations, including the production of tiles, slabs and blocks; firing ceramics, including mixing glazes and slips; preparing, loading/unloading kilns.
- Preparing other art and design materials for class projects and examinations, including cutting and painting boards, making canvasses and frames, making plaster tiles and casts.
- Maintenance and setting up of photographic equipment for teachers and students; mixing chemicals.
- Ensuring that student’s examination work is properly stored and archived, including photographing students’ work.
- Cataloguing book, photographic, film and other reference materials for access by teachers and students.
- Classroom support responsibilities
3. Art and Design Instruction
- Supervising the project work of small groups and/or individual examination students (GCSE and Advanced Level), including setting design briefs and providing feedback during the various stages of a project; ensuring access to equipment and resources; providing training for the use of such equipment and resources; supporting preparation for assessment presentation and display.
- Accompanying, guiding and instructing students during visits to galleries and Museums.
4. Providing cover for the role of the Design & Technology Technician, as appropriate
