What skills and experience we're looking for
We are seeking to appoint a dynamic, passionate and inspirational Assistant Curriculum Leader for KS3 English and whole school Literacy Coordinator. Your role will be to help instil in our students a love for the subject and a desire to learn and succeed in English as well as driving forward literacy standards across the school to ensure all students can access and engage with the whole curriculum.
We are looking for someone who has the ability to be a role model to other staff, embodying the professionalism, flexibility, resourcefulness, initiative, collaboration, and high expectations which we expect of all leaders at Churchill. The successful candidate will be expected to support the Curriculum Leader with driving change where change is needed and build on the excellent practice which already exists.
You would be joining an enthusiastic and supportive department made up of a range of specialisms and levels of experience. At Churchill Community College, we believe English is a subject where all students should thrive and the study of English should support our students to become lifelong learners who are curious about the world. Our curriculum is ambitious and exciting with lots of extra-curricular opportunities. A significant number of our students choose to stay with us for post-16 study and our numbers for both A Level English Language and A Level English Literature continue to grow.
This is an exciting opportunity to join our school and work alongside an incredible group of staff and a highly supportive governing body who will always go the extra mile for our students.

Churchill Community College is a dynamic, exciting place to work with many opportunities available for staff and students.
Churchill was inspected by Ofsted in 2019 as a ‘good’ school; previously the school had been judged ‘outstanding’, and whilst the judgement of ‘good’ was very fair we have the aspiration of ‘excellence in all we do’ and need the successful applicant to embrace this philosophy.
Churchill is very much a community school, and whilst the community we serve is enormously proud and supportive of the school, a significant proportion of our students come from low-income or deprived households, with more than 38% currently receiving Free School Meals, and 45% eligible for the Pupil Premium. Even before Ofsted began emphasising the importance of long-term learning and cultural capital we had begun the process of reviewing and developing our Key Stage 3 curriculum in order to put a greater emphasis on them, something you will see reflected in our 2019 Ofsted report. However, cultural and curricular changes take time to work through the system, and our academic outcomes saw a decline in 2018 and 2019 following the introduction of the reformed 9-1 GCSEs. We were confidently expecting to see this trend begin to be reversed in 2020 had students sat their exams, however this did not happen and the school and community were subsequently heavily impacted by Covid.
We also host the Northumbria Art, Craft and Design Partnership ITT programme, and associate lead school for the North East Partnership PE SCITT, which remains one of only a handful of ITT providers to be rated outstanding in every area under the new Ofsted framework. This work is all evidence of our continuing commitment to high quality professional development for those who work in education.
