Assistant Curriculum Leader in PE job summary

JOB PURPOSE SUMMARY:

To take a leadership role to deliver an appropriate PE, Sport and Enrichment curriculum across the Multi Academy Trust, which secures high levels of achievement, is inclusive and engaged in providing quality enrichment activities to support the transition of pupils from the school’s local primary and secondary feeders, including into the sixth form hub.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES IN ADDITION TO THOSE OF A TEACHER

To liaise with the Curriculum Leader of PE, Sport and Enrichment and support across both departments within the Academy Trust. The assistant curriculum leader in PE will be accountable for progress of students in KS3 and KS4 PE but will also have responsibilities in the delivery of Child Development and curriculum design.

Within Sandhill View Academy, The Assistant Curriculum Leader in Physical Education will be accountable for:

Management of pupils
a. Organise students into teaching groups where required.
b. Identify, after consultation with colleagues, able and talented students and those with learning support needs, and arrange appropriate action and intervention.
c. Liaise with the curriculum leader to organise the setting and marking of school examinations and supervise entries for public examinations.
d. Liaise with the curriculum leader to produce schemes of work that ensure continuity and progression in the subject for all students and include effective CEAIG, health and inclusive practice.

Management of resources
a. Assess needs and priorities in accommodation, liaising with the Senior Leadership Team on the optimum use of existing rooms as well as future requirements.
b. Plan and administer the development and storage of equipment, books and other resources.
c. Liaise on safety and security needs of the department and keep a record of stock and equipment.

Planning and development
a. Plan and co-ordinate the work of the staff in the department, and disseminate information efficiently.
b. Liaise with the curriculum leader to plan, implement and help review syllabuses, teaching schemes, assessment policies and reporting procedures in accordance with school aims, policies and practices.
c. Set expectations and targets for staff and students in relation to standards of student achievement and the quality of teaching
d. Keep abreast of current developments in the subject area and adapt curriculum content and methods of teaching and examining as appropriate.
e. Consider such developments in the context of the school’s philosophy for the curriculum as a whole.
f. Plan and lead effective departmental CPD to improve the quality of teaching.
g. Liaise with the Curriculum Leader/s of PE, Sport and Enrichment on the Trust wide development of KS3, KS4 and KS5 curriculum to ensure that not only high achievement in PE is prioritised, but the broader requirements of CEAIG, health and inclusive practice are effective.

Monitoring and evaluation
a. Analyse and interpret relevant national and school data to help inform policies, practices and teaching methods as guided by the Director of PE, Sport and Enrichment
b. Monitor teaching standards in the department and use this analysis to identify and discuss both effective practice and areas for improvement.
c. Ensure students’ work is regularly assessed and that homework is in line with school policy.
d. Use information gained from assessment, recording and reporting procedures to generate further improvement in pupil achievement.

Communication and liaison with other colleagues
a. Liaise with the curriculum leader with regard to all examinations / assessments in Physical Education and Child Development
b. Liaise with other schools and post 16 and 18 education providers / local employers where appropriate.
c. Liaise closely with the Curriculum Leader and Senior Leadership Team to maintain appropriate links with local primary and secondary schools.

Communication with parents and the wider community
a. Support the development of effective links with the wider community, including business and industry, in order to extend the subject and enhance teaching and learning.
b. Liaise with the Curriculum Leader and Senior Leadership Team in all matters concerning administration, health and safety and external agencies.

When in all schools in the Trust, the assistant curriculum leader in Physical Education will be accountable for:
Management of pupils
a. Liaise with the curriculum leader to implement policies for rewarding achievement in line with the school’s Rewards Policy.
b. Initiate, foster and deliver enrichment activities that broaden all students’ participation and with particular regard to engaging disadvantaged and Looked After Children.
c. Ensure that work is provided for classes of absent colleagues and that cover is arranged in accordance with the school’s agreed procedures

Management of resources
a. Supervise the departmental area, fabric, facilities and resources.
b. Assess all areas of departmental responsibility from a Health and Safety viewpoint and liaise / report to the Senior Leadership Team.
c. Ensure that the departmental area presents stimulating environments, which help to influence students’ attitudes positively towards the subject.

Planning and development
a. Provide inspiring and purposeful leadership of PE, Sport and Enrichment and Child Development which ensures consistency of practice with regard to standards of achievement, inclusion, CEAIG, equal opportunity and provision of enrichment across the Trust

Monitoring and evaluation
a. Guide and support colleagues in the management of all pupils in line with the individual school’s Behaviour Policy. Have specific regard to ensuring maximum engagement and minimal non-participation rates in PE and hold staff to account through the effective deployment of monitoring systems
b. Support the Trust’s programmes for New Staff induction, NQT Induction and Initial Teacher Training
j. Take a lead role if required in the professional review of PE, Sport and Enrichment and Child Development colleagues across the Trust.

Communication and liaison with other colleagues

a. Represent the subject, the department or the school in appropriate meetings and CPD activities.
b. Ensure the Curriculum Leader is informed on all issues concerning the department.
c. Liaise with the pastoral team in respect of student records, rewards and sanctions.
d. Maintain effective relationships with other middle leaders in the school.
e. Maintain appropriate links with teaching colleagues.
f. Plan and deliver activities which support transition from KS2 and promote the school.

Communication with parents and the wider community

a. Establish a partnership with parents to involve them in their child’s learning of the subject/s.
b. Provide information for parents about curriculum, attainment and progress.
c. Represent the department at relevant Consultation / Parents / Curriculum Evenings.
d. Assist the pastoral support teams in preparing extra information for parents and the provision of work, when requested, including the attainment, progress and effort data for individual students.

Other responsibilities

a. Support the post 16 provision within the Trust’s Hub Sixth Form to ensure ALL students have access to sport and enrichment which supports their personal development and aspiration, including where possible and appropriate, participation in sport at regional / national level.
b. ontribute to the wider life of the Trust, its schools and its community through out of hours and partnership work.
c. Take responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the children and young people in school.
d. Carry out any such duties as may be reasonably required by the Senior Leadership Team.
e. With appropriate support, be prepared to teach and run enrichment activities in any school within the Trust.
