What skills and experience we're looking for
We have a vacancy within the college for an Assistant Year Leader working alongside the existing pastoral team. We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic, personable and inspirational person who is committed to supporting every student to reach their full potential.
As an Assistant Head of Year, you will assist with the work of the Heads of Year in -
- taking day to day responsibility for providing pastoral support and guidance to students in a specific year group
- supporting and communicating effectively with staff in your year team around issues concerning students’ personal development, behaviour and welfare
- supporting and communicating effectively with parents in your specific year group around issues concerning students’ personal development, behaviour and welfare
- supporting with the integration of new students joining your specific year group
- supporting the re-integration of students following suspension or long term absence
- assisting with the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans, Pastoral Support Plans and Education and Health Care Plans, where necessary
- participating in school events and accompanying students on visits and out of college activities as required
- assisting with any tasks, within the remit of the Assistant Head of Year role, as directed by Heads of Year or Senior Leadership
This post operates as part of the Behaviour Support Team and day to day operations will be directed by the Behaviour Manager.
As part of the Behaviour Support Team, you will be jointly responsible for –
- delivering timetabled interventions for individual and small groups of students, whose behaviour disrupts their own and others’ learning, and require guidance in becoming more self-aware and developing strategies to emotionally regulate
- building positive relationships with key students, providing adhoc support for them throughout the school day to keep them motivated to be successful and to work through any issues that may arise
- investigating incidents: supporting students to complete statements, summarising the incidents, providing input to decide next steps and actions and communicating final decisions with relevant staff and parents/carers
- assisting pairs and small groups of students with restorative conversations, ensuring all students feel heard, encouraging students to take accountability for their actions and guiding students to problem solve to prevent reoccurrences of conflict
- providing on call support to teaching staff to efficiently target and deescalate challenging behaviour across site
- assisting in monitoring internal truancy onsite, including running missing from lesson reports, locating and supporting students to attend lessons and engaging parents/carers to support students to do this where necessary
- running the student support and internal isolation areas as directed by the Behaviour Manager, working to ensure a calm and positive atmosphere
- organising sanctions, including setting detentions, arranging work for isolated students and arranging offsite isolation places
- assisting in the filing and storage of paperwork around daily incidents, including compiling formal suspension paperwork
- assisting the development and implementation of the Behaviour Policy and other related policies and practices, via feedback to the Behaviour Manager in line management meetings
The successful candidate must be able to build excellent relationships with students, colleagues, parents and outside agencies. They must have a committed interest in maintaining the highest standards of behaviour for learning and enjoy working with young people, some of whom exhibit challenging behaviours.
