What skills and experience we're looking for

Successful and recent teaching experience of high-attaining students. - Essential

Successful experience of teaching A-levels offered at the school: Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, Computer Science or Physics. - Essential

Successful leadership and management experience in a significant middle or senior leadership role. - Essential

Expertise in analysing student data at a whole school level. - Essential

Experience of collaborating on curriculum development and course design. - Essential

Experience of developing, delivering and evaluating effective outreach activities. - Desirable

Success in preparing students for university entrance, including supporting UCAS applications. - Essential

Experience of using innovative pedagogies, including ICT, group work, formative assessment, research projects etc. - Desirable

Excellent grades in A-levels or equivalent linked to some of the subjects delivered at LUSoM. - Essential

Good honours degree in a STEM or closely related subject, ideally in the subject to be delivered at A Level. - Essential

A teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, DTLLS or equivalent) - Essential

Qualified Teacher Status/ Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills Status - Essential

An excellent classroom teacher. - Essential

The ability to deliver one or more of the subjects taught at LUSoM to university entrance standards. - Essential

Assistant Headteacher (Curriculum)

The Role

We are extremely pleased that you are considering applying for the post of Assistant Headteacher (Curriculum) (full or part time – minimum of 0.8fte) to take up the post from January 2026.

We welcome applications from suitably experienced middle leaders for this leadership role. If you meet the criteria and feel you would enjoy working here, we hope you will make an application to join us.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To contribute fully to the LUSoM mission and principles ensuring their effective implementation in all aspects of LUSoM life.
  • To plan, prepare and deliver high quality lessons in order to achieve excellent student outcomes.
  • To set and mark work in accordance with LUSoM and department assessment policy, to record work carried out and assessment of same.

Curriculum:

  • To play a key role in the fulfilment of the educational aims, objectives and targets of the school.
  • To lead the super-curricular provision at the school (known as curriculum X), with particular focus on the high achievers going above and beyond the A level Specification in preparation for STEM related degrees.
  • To co-ordinate the UCAS application process and careers guidance for the school.
  • To co-ordinate the project work done by students
  • To be responsible for the Mathematics and Computer Science departments, including line management of staff
  • To lead on mentoring, performance support and training for teaching staff.
  • To lead on timetabling, student transfers and academic progression meeting

Teaching:

  • To teach LUSoM students, maintaining outstanding standards of teaching and learning
  • To be accountable for their student outcomes in all areas of the curriculum.
  • To contribute to Maths School events e.g. open days, outreach etc.

Lancaster University School of Mathematics (LUSoM) is one of nine Maths Schools in England and part of u-Maths, the national network linking us all. We are a specialist sixth form college bringing together talented mathematicians and creating a vibrant community where students are actively encouraged to explore the subjects they love.
