Ribbon was established in 2006 following the amalgamation of 3 local schools – Murton County Primary, Murton Jubilee Primary and Murton Nursery – and adopted the unique name ‘Ribbon’. The name of the school celebrates success; the joining together of separate schools whilst acknowledging the rich cultural heritage of the village by re-imagining the name of the very first Colliery Brass Band (although the school colour is green rather than blue!). We decided to convert to become a Single Academy Trust (SAT) in 2012, and now benefit from a range of freedoms and opportunities offered by convertor academy status. However, we still retain and guarantee the same school holidays, opening times and Pay and Conditions as other schools. The Academy has gone from strength to strength, whilst retaining close ties with Durham and Gateshead Local Authorities with whom we have good working relationships. Children come to the Ribbon expecting to achieve in the classroom and they leave (the Academy) realising that the ethos and the whole of school life have been equally beneficial. Within an ethos of high expectation, our children constantly surprise themselves with how much they can do and achieve. Breadth of opportunity; depth of achievement; a chance to plan, play and be appreciated; unstinting support and care; a sense of fun; space to think and a buzz of excitement - this is what characterizes an education in the Ribbon.
Mrs A Sheridan (Head Teacher) Mr P Garrod (Chair of Trustees)
