Assistant Headteacher - EYFS job summary

Job Title: Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for EYFS

Responsible to: Headteacher and Governing Body

Salary: Leadership Scale L5 – L10

Overall Responsibility
• To provide professional guidance and support for all staff in developing high quality teaching and learning, along with effective use of resources, bringing about improvement in standards of attainment for all pupils.
• Help build and maintain a whole school culture of professionalism aligned with the teacher standards.
• To play a major role in the School’s leadership team assisting the Headteacher in creating a vision, sense of purpose and pride in not only teaching and learning but everything that we do.
• To build, maintain, lead and manage an effective team which continually enhances the quality of teaching, learning and provision throughout EYFS.
• Support the Deputy Headteacher (Inclusion) with SEND systems and procedures with a particular focus on pupils in EYFS and KS1.
• To contribute to the School Self-Evaluation Form (SEF) and School Improvement Plan (SIP).

Leadership Responsibilities
1. Take responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
2. To monitor and actively promote the personal development and well- being of all students in EYFS
3. To monitor and ensure appropriate support is in place for vulnerable students within EYFS.
4. Be responsible for strategic developments in collaboration with the Headteacher and Governors and supporting the writing of the SEF and the implementation of the SIP.
5. To develop and monitor the quality of provision and standards in EYFS.
6. Contribute to the achievement of whole-school aims and improvement and the effective implementation of school policies and practices.
7. Act as an Appraisal Leader
8. To take a lead role in the organisation, moderationand preparation for statutory EYFS assessments.
9. To help with the facilitation of transition procedures – liaising with nurseries, PVIs and the year 1 team.
10. Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills to ensure effective working relationships amongst the staff.
11. Manage, through distributive leadership, coaching, teamwork and mutual support, the development in staff of positive attitudes such as confidence in their teaching/work and a sense of accountability.
12. Initiate and maintain the provision of extra-curricular activities, e.g. organisation of school trips, participate in open evenings and pupils’ performances and make use of community and local environment to enrich teaching and learning experiences.
13. Provide input into the Governing Body.
14. Prepare and take school assemblies.
15. Lead staff CPD sessions.

Teaching and Learning
1. Be responsible for sustaining the quality of teaching amongst colleagues, so that individual pupil learning opportunities are enhanced.
2. Assist staff to interpret data, set targets and monitor pupil progress in EYFS.
3. To build a strong research led, learning culture within the EYFS team.
4. Demonstrate consistently the characteristics of outstanding teaching.
5. Take a lead role in EYFS curricular design and curricular planning.
6. Facilitate the effective use of ICT across the curriculum.
7. Support teachers in providing opportunities for all pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
8. Ensure quality first teaching is consistently applied within EYFS.
9. Ensure there are opportunities for monitoring standards of teaching and learning within the school and that observed colleagues receive prompt and meaningful feedback.

Liaison/Communication
1. Facilitate effective communication links with parents, involving them in their child’s education, progress and targets for improvement. Assist the Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher in dealing with any parental concerns including pastoral issues.
2. Organise, lead and facilitate the delivery of a range of parent workshops across the school year.
3. Chair regular meetings with the EYFS team.
4. Support staff in promoting positive pupil behaviour and where necessary keep behaviour logs and liaise with class teachers, Headteacher and the families concerned.

Safeguarding
1. To ensure that safeguarding policy and practice within EYFS is in line statutory guidance and continues to support staff vigilance.
2. Be a member of the safeguarding team as a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead and support the DSL with safeguarding procedures.
3. To have an overview of Health and Safety in EYFS, liaising with the Assistant Headteacher with overall responsibility for Health and Safety in the school.
4. Ensure that all staff within the year group have received an induction session on the School Health and Safety Policy and other relevant safeguarding policy and procedures.
5. Ensure all educational visits are risk assessed in line with Borough Policy.
6. Using the school system, report any health and safety or minor repair issues to the Site Manager.

Professional Development
1. Mentor new members of staff and NQTs within the phase in line with the school CPD programme.
2. Carry out teaching and learning reviews as required by the appraisal process, and use the process to develop the personal and professional effectiveness of each member of staff.
