Assistant Headteacher job summary

Purpose of the Post

To support and be a key person in the senior leadership team, with responsibility for leading our Primary Department and special educational needs coordination, with a 0.7 class responsibility.

Professional Duties

In addition to all those duties and responsibilities set out in “School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document 2016 and any subsequent statutory orders, the following are deemed, inter alia, to be essential responsibilities of an Assistant Head Teacher at James Rennie School.

In addition to the above, an Assistant Head Teacher is required to carry out the following:

• To support all students in achieving their potential.
• To play a major role, in conjunction with the Head Teacher, in formulating and carrying out the aims and objectives of the school and to ensure these aims are transferred to the staff
• To further develop learning pathways for pupils in our primary department.
• To ensure the staff within the Primary department carry out their day to day classroom responsibilities
• To hold Department meetings to discuss development, curriculum, teaching and learning and day to day management issues.
• To have a daily overview of staffing within the Department.
• With the head teacher evaluate the standards of teaching and learning in the Department, and ensure that proper standards of professional performance are established and maintained
• To lead a team of professionals to drive standards within the Department.
• Work with the Senior Leadership Team to identify areas for improvement and strategies from the school pupil performance data
• With the Head Teacher understand and implement relevant national strategies within the Department
• To communicate key messages arising from the SEF and Development Plan
• To ensure strategies within the department have maximum impact
• To work with the Deputy Head Teacher to ensure the delivery of the curriculum.
• To have a performance management role with other staff, be able to analyse strengths and weaknesses and advise on development for staff.
• To ensure the maintenance of good order and discipline at all times during the school day (including the midday break) when pupils are present on the school premises and whenever the pupils are engaged in authorised school activities, whether on the school premises or elsewhere
• To lead by example, providing educational vision, direction and innovation to secure the commitment of staff, parents and pupils
• To create and maintain an effective partnership with parents and carers to support and improve pupils’ achievement and personal development
• To support the Head Teacher in deciding on the effective deployment of staff.
• To understand the importance of effective financial management and to manage and monitor a budget
• To lead on special education needs coordination, including the quality assurance of EHCPs.
• To report and work with our LAB and the Eden Trust as required.
• To create and maintain an effective partnership with a range of agencies and professional bodies
• To deliver a fair and equitable management style for staff and pupils
• To be able to develop and drive with the Head Teacher the shape of education for our primary aged pupils
