What skills and experience we're looking for
Torquay Boys’ Grammar School is looking to appoint two Assistant Headteachers to join our collaborative team of senior leaders. Both roles will involve a range of responsibilities that will have cross-school impact.
One role will be to monitor progress and standards, and will include monitoring behaviour, rewards, sanctions and using pastoral information to support effective teaching and learning.
The other will be around personal development, and will include ensuring a united approach to individual students’ wider education, as well as to the growth and promotion of the whole school as a happy place to teach and learn.
The job descriptions give further details of the expectations of each role. Please choose one of these, indicating and tailoring your letter of application to the specific role you are applying for.
You will need to have experience of successfully leading whole-school change, and improving student outcomes. We are looking for someone with energy and the ability to inspire and lead, using evidence-based decision making to guide and implement the school’s next steps in its development. If you know you can work as part of a team to develop school vision and strategy, all the time with generosity, diplomacy, and humility, we look forward to receiving your application.

Do you believe that young people should be inspired to ‘Dare to Be’? Or ‘Dare to Dream’? Or just ‘Dare to ….? This is the TBGS mantra and says everything about the aspirations that we wish for our students.
We are an academically selective school set on a beautiful, green site on the edge of Torquay in South Devon, producing outstanding examination results, but we are also known as a school that dares to provide a truly holistic education for our young people together with a strong pastoral commitment to the well-being of both students and staff.
Since 1904, we have been educating able boys and since 2010 have extended our intake to able girls in the Sixth Form. The feedback we have received, and the evidence of our students’ excellent examination results, suggest that we are continuing to provide a first-class education.
Our TBGS students are encouraged to enjoy learning for its own sake, developing creative talents and fulfilling their intellectual potential; our caring environment and strong pastoral system nurtures this academic excellence.
Dare to join us!
