Assistant Pastoral Leader job summary
Although our pupils are aged between 11-16 years, they have often experienced significant gaps in their learning from moving through several primary schools or poor attendance. Therefore, their learning levels may be significantly below age-related expectations which, together with self-esteem or SEMH needs, require their teaching to be dynamic, flexible and exciting in order to engage.
Our class sizes are set at a maximum of 9 pupils and teachers are supported by at least one Learning Support Assistant within the classroom. Often, class sizes are smaller than this due to the broad range of 1:1 / paired learning and enrichment interventions in place throughout the day.
We are rated Outstanding by Ofsted and have been oversubscribed for several years.
Core Purpose
The Assistant Pastoral Leader will support the Senior Welfare Manager in ensuring the safety of all students, helping to ensure all are able to access school and learning activities, thereby supporting the wider school team to secure success and improvement, ensuring high quality education for all students.
As a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL), under the supervision and direction of the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), the Assistant Pastoral Leader will:
have a responsibility for safeguarding and child protection across the school
advise and support other members of staff on child welfare and child protection matters, and liaise with relevant agencies such as the local authority and police.
Within our schools there are a team of safeguarding leads, however it is expected that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Some safeguarding activities may be delegated to Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads (DDSLs), although the DSL will retain lead responsibility for the work of DDSLs and will ensure it is completed to the highest standard.
Gateway school is committed to safer recruitment and the successful applicant will subject to the relevant pre-employment checks, including an enhanced DBS.
