Assistant SENCO job summary

Assistant SENDCo, £35,513 FTE, pro rata to £32,920 per annum.

40 hours per week, term time only, permanent

Applications from qualified teachers also welcome and this will be looked at on a bespoke basis.

This position involves working closely with students, parents, teachers, support staff and external agencies to ensure that students with SEND receive the support they need to achieve their full potential. The Assistant SENDCo will also contribute to the strategic development of SEND provision and ensure compliance with statutory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

1. Support for Students

  • Assist in the identification, assessment, and monitoring of students with SEND, ensuring timely and effective support.
  • Support the creation of costed provision maps.
  • Provide one-to-one or small-group interventions to support students' learning and well-being.
  • Work with students to promote independence, self-confidence, and a positive attitude to learning.

2. Support for Staff

  • Support teachers and teaching assistants (TAs) in differentiating lessons and resources to meet the needs of students with SEND.
  • Provide advice, guidance, and training to teaching staff on effective SEND strategies.
  • Support the SENDCo in organising and delivering SEND-related CPD sessions for staff.

3. Administrative and Strategic Support

  • Assist the SENDCo in the preparation and updating of SEND records, including provision maps.
  • Ensure accurate and timely record-keeping, contributing to the preparation of statutory reports such as Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP) applications and annual reviews.
  • Support the SENDCo with the development and review of the school’s SEND policy, information report and procedures.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of SEND legislation and ensure the school’s compliance with the SEND Code of Practice.

4. Liaison and Communication

  • Act as a point of contact for parents and carers of students with SEND, offering regular communication and updates on progress.
  • Work with external professionals, such as educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, and local authority specialist teacher advisors, to ensure students receive appropriate support.
  • Liaise with the local authority to monitor and track progress on SEND cases, ensuring timely support and compliance.
  • Participate in multi-agency meetings and contribute to the development and implementation of EHCPs and other support plans.

Essential Criteria

  • Qualifications: SEND qualifications or training are highly desirable.
  • Experience: Proven experience of working with students with SEND in a school setting, with a track record of improving student outcomes. And/or experience of working within the SEND department of a local authority.
  • Knowledge: Sound understanding of the SEND Code of Practice, EHCP processes, and effective SEND strategies for secondary school students.
  • Skills: Strong organisational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks, and effective communication skills with students, parents, staff and external agencies.
  • Personal Attributes: Empathy, patience, and a positive approach to problem-solving. Commitment to promoting an inclusive educational environment.
