What skills and experience we're looking for

Saint Pius X Catholic High School is a smaller than average, oversubscribed 11-16 school situated in Rotherham but drawing students from Barnsley and Doncaster alongside those from Rotherham. We welcome all students who wish for an education within an inclusive faith environment. The school is well-regarded and recognised as having high expectations within a nurturing and supportive ethos.

We are looking to appoint an Assistant SENDCO to support our SENDCO in leading the provision, support and teaching of students who have a range of special educational needs. The SEND department consists of 9 Teaching Assistants, 2 HLTA’s, a SEND Student Support Manager and a full-time SEND Administrator.

They will assist the SENDCO in the strategic direction of SEND support within the school, ensuring that it meets its statutory duties regarding students with additional needs.

The prime purpose of the role is to work with the SENDCO:

  • To assist the SENDCO in the strategic development and evaluation of SEND policy and practice within the school and to support its day to day operation
  • To promote an inclusive ethos where all students have access to a broad and balanced curriculum.
  • To raise the standard of achievement of students with SEND
  • To work alongside the SENDCO and ensuring that there is effective, co-ordinated provision and support for students who are at risk of underachieving as a result of their special educational needs
  • To support the SENDCO in building staff confidence and competence in teaching and supporting SEND students

TEACHING AND LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT:

  • Identify students who may be at risk of underachieving because of SEND reasons
  • Monitor teaching and learning activities, including planning and students’ work, to ensure they meet the needs of students with SEND
  • Model outstanding, inclusive teaching and support colleagues as appropriate
  • Ensure that all staff are up to date with teaching and learning strategies that promote effective practice
  • Liaise with colleagues including provision of support with planning, differentiation and assessment for learning strategies
  • Collect and interpret specialist assessment data and ensure teachers use this effectively when planning lessons
  • Carry out assessments for the requesting of special consideration for examinations where required
  • Contribute to oral and written assessments relating to individual students or groups of students internally, with parents and with outside agencies
  • Liaise with other schools/colleges/providers to ensure continuity of support and learning at transition points for students with SEND

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership and Management

  • Assist on strategic planning, policy development and evaluation of impact in the area of SEND
  • Ensuring that there is appropriate provision to support the needs of students with SEND
  • Assist in the leadership of and deployment of the SEND team effectively to raise achievement for SEND students
  • Assist on the review, development and maintenance systems for identifying, assessing and reviewing SEND
  • Managing referral procedures, quality of provision and record keeping/reporting
  • Maximise opportunities for SEND staff and subject teachers to work together to best meet and monitor the needs of SEND students
  • Ensure that, when required, student support plans are prepared, implemented, monitored and evaluated
  • Mentor and develop the skills of all SEND team members and be responsible for their line management
  • Contribute fully to multi-agency working
  • Contribute to the evaluation of the impact of the work of the SEND team to improve practice on an ongoing basis and provide regular information and advice to the Leadership Team
  • Contribute to an annual review of SEND and report to the relevant Governing Body committee
  • Contribute to the support, guidance and training of school staff on the teaching of students in conjunction with the SENDCo
  • Advise on and contribute to the professional development of the whole school staff in the area of SEND
  • Maintain effective partnerships with parents and carers to promote their child’s learning
  • Undertake professional development activities as appropriate to increase personal and professional effectiveness and keep up-to-date with current practice and legislation

Additional tasks

  • Write and submit paperwork for children already in school who may require EHCPs
  • Organise and conduct Annual Reviews for EHCP students as directed by the SENDCo
  • Actively work with outside agencies and professionals and complete necessary referrals to support students to access the right support at the right time.
  • Assist the SENDCo to ensure students receive appropriate access arrangements for school and public exams
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and parents, acknowledging the professional need for mutual support
  • Any other such tasks and duties directed by the SENDCo that are commensurate with the level/grade of the post
  • Assist with the management of intervention by analysing data and implementing appropriate support based on academic attainment and progress
