If you think life at John Colet School would suit you, then we are looking for an ambitious, enthusiastic teacher to join us from 2025.
The English Department currently comprises 13 teachers. We have a strong team ethos, priding ourselves on our consistency of approach and sharing of good practice and resources to ensure the progress of the students. This has led to consistently strong results at both GCSE and A Level.
We have a purpose built English block which comprises a suite of English teaching rooms and a Drama Studio. All of the rooms are equipped with multimedia projectors, visualisers and interactive whiteboards, as well as all students having their own chromebooks.
We work to a two-year Key Stage 3 curriculum. The department has written its own schemes of work with a focus on challenge and covering texts from different cultures and traditions. These are matched to the curriculum and build on the work done at Key Stage 2, which draw on both the good practice and expertise within the department. We focus on developing and applying the key skills from the GCSE assessment criteria to KS3 work, while also making time in lessons for a focus on reading, creativity, imagination and enjoyment of the subject.
These skills are then consolidated from Year 9 onwards where all Key Stage 4 students follow the AQA Examination Board Specification in both Language and Literature. A particular focus here is on refining and developing the students’ analytical writing through supporting them to form their own ideas and opinions about the texts studied. Through this we aim to give each student the confidence to explore less obvious interpretations.
English Literature has always been a popular choice at A level. Post-16 students follow AQA Specification B.
From Challenge Partners peer review March 2024:
‘Students describe the school as ‘welcoming’, strongly echoed by new staff and students who quickly felt ‘fully part of the community.'
‘Staff find that induction and whole school professional development programmes directly inform practice that support both staff and students. One teacher explained how ‘literacy training has improved how I teach languages to students with lower reading ages.’ One member of staff stated that since joining JCS they have ‘become a better teacher.’
New staff compare JCS to their previous schools and state that facilities at the school are excellent, ‘Stuff works!’
They describe leaders as approachable with strong communication and a focus on well-being. As a result, new staff feel settled and ready to work quickly, with one concluding, ‘My life is better since joining John Colet.’
Teachers drive the ethos for students to thrive through their relationships, support and how they advocate for student needs. A wide range of students feel that their teachers are the most important aspect of the school. As a result, students self-regulate whilst working independently, eager to complete projects and extended activities.
The John Colet School takes the safeguarding and wellbeing of students seriously and this post is subject to an enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check, KCSiE and Qualifications check.
John Colet School reserves the right to either extend or reduce the vacancy window to that advertised depending on volume of applications received. We would therefore recommend early return of completed application forms to avoid disappointment.
