What skills and experience we're looking for

We have a vacancy within the college for an Assistant Year Leader working alongside the existing staff. We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and inspirational person who is committed to ensuring that every student reaches their full potential.

As an Assistant Year Leader, you will assist with the work of the Head of Year Leaders -

  • taking day to day responsibility for providing pastoral support and guidance to students in a specific year group
  • contributing to whole college behaviour management
  • supporting staff on issues concerning students’ personal development and welfare
  • assisting the development and implementation of the Behaviour Policy and other related policies and practices
  • supporting individual students whose attendance and behaviour disrupts their own and others’ learning
  • supporting the re-integration of students following absence
  • assisting with the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans, Pastoral Support Plans and Education and Health Care Plans
  • communicating with parents/carers and staff
  • providing the appropriate information, advice and guidance enabling students to make responsible choices concerning their health, behaviour and safety
  • fulfilling daily duties including contacting parents, keeping up to date and maintaining records of attendance and behaviour
  • participating in House events and accompanying students on visits and out of college activities as required
  • completing clerical/admin tasks as designated by the Head of Year Leader/ Behaviour Manager including forms, such as racist logs and updating student records
  • assisting with any tasks, within the remit of the Assistant Year Leader role, as directed by the Assistant Principal
  • assisting in pastoral tasks directed by the Head of Year Leaders or senior members of staff.

This post operates as part of the Behaviour Support Team and day to day operations will be directed by the Behaviour Manager.

As part of the Behaviour Team, the role requires the post holder to work as a team to –

  • ensure work is available for students in Student Support
  • be responsible for setting detentions
  • be responsible for arranging off site isolation places
  • be responsible for taking statements from young people and summarising the incidents for further action
  • be responsible for phoning home to update parents on outcomes from investigations
  • ensure that all paperwork around daily incidents is recorded
  • produce daily wash-up notes and actions for escalation
  • be responsible for the systematic filing of all behaviour records
  • be responsible for sending formal letters to parents for isolation and exclusions
  • ensure re-integration plans are formally recorded on Edulink/SIMs
  • be responsible for running the missing registers reports
  • identify students who are missing from lessons and notify home
  • be capable of producing formal suspension paperwork
  • complete reduced hours provision returns to county
  • complete racist/violent/prejudicial incident returns to county
  • supervise students in the isolation room

The successful candidate must be able to build excellent relationships with students, colleagues, parents and outside agencies. They must have a committed interest in maintaining the highest standards of behaviour for learning and enjoy working with young people, some of whom have challenging behaviour.
