‘Staff morale is high with staff welcoming the open conversations about teaching, and they welcome the ways leaders encourage the evaluation and sharing of what works’ Ofsted 2019

Scalby School is looking to appoint an ambitious teacher, with a proven record of delivering excellent outcomes for their students, as an Associate Senior Leader and Teacher of French. We are looking for a colleague who is committed to their continual professional and leadership development. You may already have some experience of whole school projects, although this is not essential.

You will be able to give examples of how you use your initiative to continually improve your practice or that of other colleagues. Flexibility and being able to adapt will be in your nature as you join us in our newly created role.

This unique and exciting post will be of interest to colleagues who are in at least their third year of teaching and who have aspirations to middle and/or senior leadership.

As our new colleague you will be a member of the school’s extended leadership team. You will develop your leadership skills by having the opportunity to work across our four leadership areas of Improving Teaching and Learning, Improving Curriculum and Assessment, Improving Achievement and Standards and Improving Engagement and Safety at different points of the school year. There will also be the chance to work with our new Teaching School Alliance team.

You will benefit from a well-planned CPD programme, which will include:

• An induction programme
• A place on an NPQML or NPQSL course as appropriate
• A weekly mentoring session
• Attendance at our weekly Leadership Strategy meetings

As a new Associate Senior leader, you will also benefit from mentoring by a member of our core Senior Leadership Team.

We are of course looking for an excellent classroom practitioner who can demonstrate that they can engage students through the intelligent application of different Formative Assessment techniques.

There will be a slightly reduced timetable to allow participation in leadership activities.

Scalby School is a successful and popular 11-16 community school and in recent years we have become the school of choice in our local community. We were judged ‘good’ by Ofsted in 2019 and in 2019 we celebrated sustained results. Our provisional P8 score in 2019 placed us in the top 20% of schools nationally again. We are proud of our broad and balanced GCSE based curriculum.

Our students are diverse, exciting and talented – and the same is true of our staff. We put huge emphasis on professional development, most of it in-house, and are proud of the highly effective teaching, which characterises our school. We are also noted for our ‘can do’ attitude. We are keen, always, to encourage new and/or young staff to make their mark as soon as they are ready.

2021/2022 is hugely exciting for our school. Our Trust (Coast and Vale Learning Trust) is a growing family of schools based across the North Yorkshire Coast and Wolds and Vale. As the founding member of the Trust we are working closely with our sister school Lady Lumley’s School (11-18) as we share learning, best practice and build a secondary hub our coastal area can be proud of. With access to the Teaching Alliance, NLE and subject/leadership experts we continue to rightly place staff development, training and resources at the heart of our journey.

We are:

• A ‘Good’ school in every area as judged by Ofsted in 2012 and in 2019

• A school with above average Progress 8 score because our students exceed expectations.

• A school with a clear focus on teaching and learning. We are proud of our bespoke programme of nationally recognised, high-profile seminars designed by our Teaching School and with key note speakers from across the educational world.

• A leading school in the Scarborough and North Yorkshire area with a real focus on making sure all our staff develop professionally.

• A school where the development of the culture and character of our students is at the heart of our curriculum – so that all our students leave school knowing how to conduct themselves in the wider world.

You would join an MFL faculty which is staffed with experienced and successful specialists who continue to build year on year in terms of outcomes, curriculum and extracurricular options to our students. A key focus for the department is to build on the strengths and successes in order to develop an innovative curriculum model that is based on the benefits of learning a second language. You will work closely with the team who will support, develop and challenge you.

We are proud to work alongside our eight other local secondary schools and we believe we have a unique opportunity for colleagues to grow, develop and thrive in their career as part of our coastal community. For more information on our Coastal Offer and how you can make a difference by teaching on the Yorkshire Coast please visit www.teachyc.co.uk

The date of commencement for this post will be Easter 2022 or earlier if possible. Interviews will be held as soon as possible after the closing date.

Dear applicant,

Allow me to extend a warm welcome from all governors, staff and students of Scalby School.

It is hard to encapsulate in words the full dynamism and vibrancy of our school. We are hugely proud of our students and privileged to serve them and this community. We see it as our professional and moral duty to prepare them as individuals to play their part as active citizens – rounded and centred and aware of all they might contribute to the world. In practical terms, this commitment is manifested in the lessons we deliver, the extra-curricular opportunities we offer and in the wider opportunities we promote.

Scalby is a school with a strong academic tradition but we are equally committed to the Arts, to sport and to collective and individual achievement beyond the classroom. Our annual productions held at the Stephen Joseph theatre are testament to this, and over the years we have seen productions of Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Our House to name but a few.

We have developed and benefited from our partnerships within Scalby Learning Trust, Scarborough Teaching Alliance and local secondary and primaries – a few reasons to join us!

In recent years enormous strides have been made to further increase learning standards. This hard work has seen results improve consistently and led to Ofsted rating our school as ‘Good’ in 2012 and in 2019. I truly believe we are a school with highly effective teachers and support staff producing outstanding outcomes for our students.

I hope you can see that this is an excellent time to join Scalby. If successful you will join a staff team of wonderful professionals who have ambition for our students and for themselves. I take pride in ensuring colleagues receive opportunities to develop their skills and experiences – and we have an enviable reputation for delivering high quality professional development.

I hope that you will take the time to come and see and experience for yourself the warm and welcoming atmosphere which makes our vision a reality.

Good luck with your application.

Chris Robertson
