Associate Senior Leader and Teacher of Science, Scalby School, Scarborough job summary

L1 – L2: Plus a £4,000 Recruitment and Retention Payment and access to a Relocation Reimbursement of up to £8,000 for the right candidate

Start date: September 2020

‘Staff morale is high with staff welcoming the open conversations about teaching, and they welcome the ways leaders encourage the evaluation and sharing of what works’ Ofsted 2019

Scalby School is looking to appoint an ambitious teacher, with a proven record of delivering excellent outcomes for their students, as an Associate Senior Leader and Teacher of Science. We are looking for a colleague who is committed to their continual professional and leadership development. You may already have some experience of whole school projects, although this is not essential.

You will be able to give examples of how you use your initiative to continually improve your practice or that of other colleagues. Flexibility and being able to adapt will be in your nature as you join us in our newly created role.

This unique and exciting post will be of interest to colleagues who are in at least their third year of teaching and who have aspirations to middle and/or senior leadership.

As our new colleague you will be a member of the school’s extended leadership team. You will develop your leadership skills by having the opportunity to work across our four leadership areas of Improving Teaching and Learning, Improving Curriculum and Assessment, Improving Achievement and Standards and Improving Engagement and Safety at different points of the school year. There will also be the chance to work with our new Teaching School Alliance team.

As a new Associate Senior leader, you will also benefit from mentoring by a member of our core Senior Leadership Team.

We are of course looking for an excellent classroom practitioner who can demonstrate that they can engage students through the intelligent application of different Formative Assessment techniques.

There will be a slightly reduced timetable to allow participation in leadership activities.

Scalby School is a successful and popular 11-16 community school and in recent years we have become the school of choice in our local community. We were judged ‘good’ by Ofsted in 2019 and in 2019 we celebrated sustained results. Our provisional P8 score places us in the top 20% of schools nationally again. We are proud of our broad and balanced GCSE based curriculum.

Our students are diverse, exciting and talented – and the same is true of our staff. We put huge emphasis on professional development, most of it in-house, and are proud of the highly effective teaching, which characterises our school. We are also noted for our ‘can do’ attitude. We are keen, always, to encourage new and/or young staff to make their mark as soon as they are ready.

We are:

•A ‘Good’ school in every area as judged by Ofsted in 2012 and in 2019

•A school with above average Progress 8 score because our students exceed expectations.

•A school with a clear focus on teaching and learning. We are proud of our bespoke programme of nationally recognised, high-profile seminars designed by our Teaching School and with key note speakers from across the educational world.

•A leading school in the Scarborough and North Yorkshire area with a real focus on making sure all our staff develop professionally.

•A school where the development of the culture and character of our students is at the heart of our curriculum – so that all our students leave school knowing how to conduct themselves in the wider world.

In 2019 our provisional Science Results at Grade 5 and above were:
•Biology – 98%
•Chemistry – 93%
•Physics – 91%
•Combined Science – 36%

You would join a Science faculty of seven which is staffed with Science specialists who continue to build year on year in terms of outcomes, curriculum and extracurricular options to our students. A key focus for the department is to build on the strengths and successes seen across English and Maths and as our new teacher, you will work closely with the team who will support, develop and challenge you.

We are proud to work alongside our eight other local secondary schools and we believe we have a unique opportunity for colleagues to grow, develop and thrive in their career as part of our coastal community. For more information on our Coastal Offer and how you can make a difference by teaching on the Yorkshire Coast please visit www.teachyc.co.uk

The date of commencement for this post will be September 2020. Interviews will be held as soon as possible after the closing date.

Closing date: Friday 28th February 2020
