Job Description: Behaviour Support Assistant

Start Date: ASAP

New Scale Point: Scale 4 Point 7 to 11 (£18755 to £20168 pro-rata figure).

Hours: 37  (Term time only plus 3 training days)

Reports to: Student Support Manager

Liaises with:     Other Pastoral Leaders, SSOs, Attendance Team, Behaviour lead, Safeguarding Team, SLT,   teaching and support staff within the school, external agencies, pupils and families.

Guiding principles:  To focus on developing the ’learning character’ of students in line with the school   virtues.

Focus on the individual students and their aspirations, eliminating barriers to   achievement.

Consistent high standards of learning and progress across the College.

Efficient and effective communication with all stakeholders.

Purpose:

  • To support the Student Support Manager in leading a coordinated student support service for all year groups (6) 7-13: focusing on encouraging students to meet the high standards of behaviour, Abbey College Spirit and supporting all departments as required.

Key Responsibilities:

Ethos & Welfare: To assist the Student Support Manager with regard to:

  • Providing administrative support for RSLs, and SLT by contacting parents and proactive telephone calls. 
  • Assisting with the transition programme for students joining the college and their families.

Behaviour: To assist the Student Support Manager with regard to:

  • Coordinating the arrangements for pupils to be removed to ensure all students are learning.(Due to the size of our site this can be a physically demanding part of the roll.)
  • Coordinating the detention process to ensure that all students sit the appropriate sanction and that parental communication is complete.
  • Responding to behavioural incidents by investigating, collating statements and carrying out actions that arise in line with school policy
  • Coordinating the arrangements for pupils suspended from school
  • Parent meetings as needed and responding to parent enquiries regarding the behaviour system.
  • Supporting the behaviour lead to complete RJ sessions and other pastoral interventions.
  • Undertake training, attend INSET days and carry out relevant CPD to further develop understanding of pupils’ social, mental and emotional health (SMEH) needs and resulting behavioural difficulties.
  • Undertaking necessary administrative work, ensuring all records of behaviour management within the school are kept up-to-date.
  • Completing data reports for staff as required.

Wellbeing: To assist the Student Support Manager with regard to

  • Ensuring all pupils have equal access to learning using appropriate strategies and resources, where necessary.
  • Liaising with pastoral staff members to ensure the wellbeing of pupils and their full participation in school life.
  • Raising any concerns regarding pupils’ behaviour with the relevant RSL/ SLT.
  • Placing a strong focus on pupils’ SEMH needs.

First Aid: To assist the Student Support Manager with regard to

  • Managing the school’s First Aid provision and budget including supplies, procedures, training schedules (bookings) and risk assessments.
  • Working with the SENCO to support students with IHCPs
  • Sharing relevant student medical information with staff.
  • Ensuring annual medical updates for students are completed, including Asthma, Allergy and IHCP registers.
  • Completing Individual Health Care Plans for students where necessary and carry out annual reviews of IHCPS.
  • Managing the process of students with medical conditions joining the school.
  • Managing and be responsible for the administration provision, storage, disposal of prescription medication kept on the school site, and maintain personal professional registration (SQP Registration) to enable supervision, administration and handling of “Controlled Drugs” on site in accordance with The Controlled Drugs (Supervision of Management and Use) Regulations 2006, acting as “Competent Appointed Person”.
  • Producing reports for governors and SLT on First Aid Incidents
  • Managing the school’s annual student vaccination programme in conjunction with the local public health team and NHS Community Health Team Nurses. To ensure parental communication and consent procedures for vaccinations programmes are in place and effective.
  • Managing the on the day organisation, staff cover, and external providers and NHS Community Health Team and provision of the vaccination programme.

Wellbeing

  • Ensure all pupils have equal access to learning using appropriate strategies and resources, where necessary.
  • Liaise with pastoral staff members to ensure the wellbeing of pupils and their full participation in school life.
  • Raise any concerns regarding pupils’ behaviour with the relevant Raising Standards Lead.
  • Implement any specific arrangements for individual pupils, ensuring that relevant staff members are aware of the measures in place.
  • Provide individual pastoral support to pupils, where necessary.
  • Continuously motivate and challenge pupils, whilst promoting and reinforcing self-esteem.

Safeguarding

  • The post holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people for whom they come into contact will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the School’s Child Protection Policy Statement at all times.  If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the school they must report any concerns to their Line Manager or the School’s Child Protection Officer. 

Variation Clause

  • This job description will be reviewed and updated periodically in order to ensure that it relates to the job performed or to incorporate any proposed changes. This procedure will be conducted by the Headteacher or line manager in consultation with the post holder. In these circumstances it will be the aim to reach agreement on reasonable changes but if agreement is not possible management reserves the right to make changes to the job description following consultation.
