Behaviour Support Assistant job summary
Next Steps is a Behaviour Support Provision, based at St Matthew’s Primary School, Luton, serving the most complex pupils from within the Central Area Partnership, made up of nine schools.
The aim of the Provision is to modify pupils’ behaviour through individualised programmes to build their resilience, teach them the skill of making safe choices, ultimately enabling them to access mainstream education successfully over time.
We are looking to recruit a Behaviour Support Assistant (BSA), ideally with Early Years experience, to join our specialist team to work with these vulnerable pupils who display challenging behaviour, on both a one-to-one and group basis.
Whilst Next Steps is located at St Matthew’s Primary School, as a BSA you will generally support pupils within the provision but may also work doing outreach within a child’s mainstream base school. This is dependent on a child’s individual needs and any reintegration programme.
We work in close collaboration with our partnership schools who provide differentiated work for our pupils in the core subjects, alongside specialist learning to enable pupils to self regulate and manage their feelings safely in a mainstream setting. Our primary goal is to support pupils to develop the skills they need to remain in mainstream school.
From our new Behaviour Support Assistant we would ask you to:
Have experience of supporting children with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties in either a mainstream or special school setting
Have experience of the primary or early years curriculum
Be able to prepare and differentiate resources and lessons to support children in accessing the curriculum
Understand and have a working knowledge of de-escalation techniques
Be adaptable to changing circumstances and the needs of the pupils
Have the ability to maintain a calm demeanour
Understand the need for a culture of safeguarding
Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Be enthusiastic, flexible and hardworking
Work well in a team
In return we can offer you:
A truly child centred, friendly and holistic provision
A strong and supportive team and school community
A safe and nurturing environment for our staff as well as our pupils
A supportive and solution focused team around the child who are dedicated to providing the best for our pupils.
As well as:
Progression pathways
Access to an Employee Assistance Programme
Comprehensive whole school and individual CPD programme
Onsite parking
A well-equipped staff room, access to school lunches and a central location with many amenities in very short walking distance
We all know a picture speaks a thousand words and we would welcome you to visit, please do call to arrange an appointment.
Apply now and take a step towards your future career at Next Steps!
This role is term time only plus INSET days, 14 hours per week, Thursday and Friday.
The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share this commitment. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS). CVs will not be accepted for any posts based in schools.

St Matthew’s Primary School is a popular, oversubscribed and happy school full of enthusiastic and well behaved children eager to have fun learning. We are a well-resourced and energetic school which is well supported by parents, governors and the wider community.
Alongside our mainstream provision we host a Behaviour Provision on behalf of the Central Area Partnership (CAP), made up of nine schools. This provision supports children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs that can make full time mainstream education difficult for them. The aim of the provision is to provide an environment, pastoral and educational experience that keeps them moving forward in their learning but focuses specifically on their personal, social and emotional development.
Through personalised learning programmes the provision endeavours to enable children to be fully integrated back to their own school as soon as possible, and equip them with the skills and strategies to be successful in this.
The Provision is based in a purpose built building with full access to all school facilities. The space was designed to enable a personalised, hands on, creative, practical and responsive curriculum so that the needs of individuals could be effectively met in a safe space.
