Caretaker job summary

We are recruiting for a Caretaker to join our amazing team here at West Wycombe School!

Main Purpose of Post

The overall purpose of this role is to ensure that the school is a clean, safe and well-maintained environment. This will include:

Ensuring that the premises, internally and externally, are kept clean and litter free

Day to day supervision and monitoring of contractors and their activities, including cleaning teams etc

To be a first point of contact for all school premises issues as they arise and rectifying / escalating as required to the Multi-Site Manager

Carrying out basic repairs / general handyperson activities, porterage duties, cleaning and routine maintenance and PPM tasks

Day to day security of the site, which may include opening / lock up of the school

Main Responsibilities and Tasks

Premises Management

Monitor day to day maintenance, repair and cleaning of the school and where necessary undertake repairs or escalate to the Multi-Site Manager

Develop an appropriate monitoring schedule to ensure that the school site is kept clean, safe and in a good state of repair and stocked with all necessary supplies

Monitor the performance of all contractors to ensure a clean, tidy and well-maintained school environment at all times

To read and be aware of all school policies, risk assessments and procedures

Be aware of location of essential services including water isolation values, fire points, drainage systems, and gas and power supplies

To carry out any and all PPM and maintenance tasks as requested by the Multi-Site Manager

Carry out general porterage duties, such as the movement of furniture and equipment around the school

Cleaning and Welfare

Monitor and ensure the site is kept clean, tidy and attractive to ensure the activities of the school can take place in an environment suited to learning

Liaise with cleaning teams to ensure that all areas are maintained to high standards

Ensure that at the start of each day the school has been properly stocked with all necessary supplies for the day, including hand towels, soap, toilet paper etc

Undertake ad-hoc cleaning duties, such as litter picking, disposal of waste and cleaning tasks in the absence of a cleaner

Ensure that all tools and equipment used in your duties, are kept clean and in good working order

Security

Maintain the security of the school and to be a key holder for the site and be flexible for call outs as required

Locking and un-locking of the school as and when required or directed by the Multi-Site Manager

Ensure that all windows, doors and gates are in good working condition and are / can be shut and locked appropriately

To carry out any maintenance checks or PPM checks as required and directed by the Multi-Site Manager

When locking the school, ensuring that all windows, lights, doors and appliances are all closed and switched off

Escalate any concerns or issues immediately to the Multi-Site Manager

Health and Safety

To be aware of the school’s duty of care in relation to staff, pupils and visitors and to comply with health and safety policies at all times

Ensure all duties to be carried out in compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act

To be aware and ensure all contractors are aware and shown a copy of the asbestos register

To be aware of and promote the school’s policy in relation to no smoking

Be aware of the fire evacuation and lockdown procedures, and fulfilling specific duties as directed by the Multi-Site Manager

Assist the Multi-Site Manager in ensuring all necessary health and safety checks are performed and paperwork completed in line with the Trust’s and school’s policies

Be aware and have a good understanding of what COSHH is and the school’s policy on COSHH. Promoting good compliance and awareness to all staff and contractors around COSHH

Be involved and carry out site gritting as and when required, taking direction from the Multi-Site Manager

Lettings and Meetings

To assist the Multi-Site Manager with any lettings, both during school hours and out of hours

To ensure all equipment, furniture, refreshments are in place as necessary for the smooth operation of both the school functions and outside lettings

To be flexible in covering for out of hours lettings to open and lock up upon agreement with the Multi-Site Manager

Ensure the site / area is cleaned after any bookings and ready for use by the school

Portering

Providing a porterage service to ensure all equipment and supplies are in the correct place so school activities can proceed as expected

Ensure furniture, equipment and any other necessary items as required are set out in connection with assemblies, parents evenings, fetes and any special events

Undertake any other general porterage activity requested by the school

Confidentiality

Be aware of, and comply with, the school’s and Trusts confidentiality policy

General Responsibilities and Safeguarding

To undertake any specific tasks requested by the Headteacher or Multi-Site Manager as required

To establish and maintain positive, constructive and professional working relationships with all staff, Governors, visitors, students, parents and all other stakeholders so the school

To be aware of and comply with the codes of conduct, regulations and policies of the school and its commitment to equal opportunities

Act in a courteous way at all times in communications with both colleagues and other school stakeholders

To support and contribute to the school’s commitment to Safeguarding, enabling children to be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution and achieve economic well-being.

To contribute to whole school events as and when required; such as school fair, PTA events etc

Whilst every effort has been taken to explain the main duties and responsibilities of the post, each individual task undertaken may not be identified. Therefore, there is an expectation that the post holder will carry out any other reasonable duties or requests in keeping with this post or as may be determined from time to time by the Headteacher.

The Post holder will contribute to the school’s objectives in service delivery by:
