Handyman/Caretaker job summary

One day a week (ideally Monday's) Term time only plus additional days if required in the school holidays

Mondays - Approx 6.5 hours excluding 30 mins lunch

Salary: Grade C/D (L1/L2 depending on experience - £12.38-£13.47 per hour)

This is a unique opportunity to work in partnership with staff and governors to maintain an attractive, clean, safe and secure environment where team work is valued within our happy and friendly school. You will need to be able to take the initiative in identifying work needed around the school, be organised, skilled in maintenance and problem solving, and be able to work with all teaching staff and the leadership team in an open and trusting manner.

Purpose of the job:

  • To carry out repair/maintenance work around the school as requested by staff members
  • Be able to identify Health and Safety matters and rectify as needed
  • Take pride in making the school look presentable by maintaining it to a high standard and carrying out improvements where needed
  • Perform duties in line with Health and Safety regulations and take action where hazards are identified, report serious hazards to line manager immediately

Key Objectives

  • Carry out caretaking duties as directed by the Head Teacher, Line Manager or other members of staff
  • Be responsible for safe storage of equipment and materials when they arrive
  • Record keeping of duties to undertake in line with Health & Safety checks
  • Undertake repairs to site, furniture and fixtures (i.e. not requiring qualified craftsperson) and maintenance of the buildings
  • Undertake regular health and safety checks of buildings, grounds, fixtures and fittings, (including compliance with fire safety regulations) and equipment by carrying out weekly walks of the school to help identify this
  • Operate and regularly check systems such as heating, cooling, lighting and security (including CCTV and alarms)
  • Collect and assemble waste for collection

Flexible working additional hours may be required but this can be discussed

The ideal candidate will: 

Have hands on experience of a wide range of maintenance/janitorial functions

Adhere to school local and national authority’s guidelines on Health and Safety

Have experience within a school (desirable but not essential)

Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required 

Be able to demonstrate competencies in: 

Planning and organising work – ability to respond appropriately to deadlines and changing priorities  

Using initiative – within the scope of work, prioritising and finding solutions appropriately 

Working interdependently – independent decision making within the scope of responsibility and being part of a team working to deadlines 

Managing risks – awareness of obligations in relation to confidentiality, child protection (as based in schools) and health and safety.
