Job description

Reporting to the Head of Chemistry, and liaising with teaching staff in the Science Department, the Chemistry Laboratory Technician assists the Science Department generally but has special responsibility for managing curriculum requirements for chemistry practicals.

There are 1,092 pupils in the school, with 11 Science teachers operating in 10 laboratories, supported by three technicians. The Chemistry department consists of three full time teachers and approximately 80 Chemistry lessons are taught each week.

Essential educational requirements

Good level of general education including science subject(s) at least to NVQ 3 or equivalent, plus laboratory experience, together with good numeracy and literacy skills

Essential skills and experience

COSHH
IT literate
Thorough understanding of Health and Safety procedures especially as they relate to work in the laboratory
Knowledge of appropriate use of laboratory equipment and ability to communicate and demonstrate this knowledge effectively to staff and students
Knowledge of policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, security, equal opportunities and confidentiality
Understanding of school financial procedures
Have ability to relate well to children and adults, understanding their needs and being able to respond appropriately
Excellent communication skills and the ability to empathise with students and a range of professionals

This is a full-time role (term-time only).
Salary is paid at level 5 or 6 on the support staff scale (£18,058- £19,863), dependent upon qualifications and experience.
