The Board of Trustees is looking to appoint an inspiring, experienced leader to further drive development in our successful and well-reputed Trust. Trustees are seeking a leader with high levels of integrity, honesty, and transparency.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate expertise in leadership and it is crucial that the appointee is completely aligned with our vision and values. They should have deep knowledge and experience of leading a complex and dynamic organisation(s), with a proven ability to lead improvement, manage change, set and maintain a positive culture and competently manage risk.

The successful candidate will also have proven ability to grow partnerships across the sector, advocating for our wonderful young people in support of improving their quality of life. They will lead with a drive to empower our communities to shine, further securing trust and honesty in collaboration with our family of schools and across wider partnerships. We are seeking a decisive and bold leader with an innovative vision to take our Trust into its next chapter.

About Portland Academy

We cater for approximately 168 students between the ages of 11 and 19 who experience severe learning difficulties and profound, multiple and complex medical needs. A growing number of our pupils also have an Autistic spectrum condition. Portland offers co-educational day provision to pupils from a catchment area which covers the city of Sunderland and beyond.

The academy is able to offer a number of part time or assessment placements for identified pupils.

Portland Academy is part of ‘The Ascent Academies’ Trust’, a multi-academy trust which currently consists of 5 special schools across Sunderland, Durham and Stockton. This partnership provides us with a wealth of experience and knowledge and opens up many opportunities for working together to improve outcomes for our pupils.

The school has excellent facilities, including a social café, therapy pool, sensory room, OT Room, woodland walk, outdoor adventure area and bike track. These, together with a relevant, progressive and challenging curriculum delivered and supported by committed staff, enables us to offer a wonderful range of varied opportunities to enrich our pupils’ lives.
