Class Teacher job summary
- An exciting opportunity to teach delightful students in a special school for students with severe to moderate learning difficulties within the ASD, SLCN and C&L ranges. Working with a class team and a KS3 team you would be the primary teacher for a class of 12-13 students, teaching most curriculum subjects and leading a subject across the school.
- We are a friendly, happy and caring school, providing a positive, inclusive and enriching educational experience for our young people. We view each of our pupils as unique and shape our provision to meet their individual needs and accelerate their progress in a variety of areas, e.g. personal, social, academic and well-being. Our commitment to supporting the ‘whole’ child and their development is underpinned by our strong pastoral systems and our committed and trained staff. At Westhaven we promote inclusion and equality and celebrate diversity.
- Our vision is students who are ‘Valued, Inspired, Prepared”, which is upheld through our values: We shape our learners to be: safely independent, confident communicators, respectful citizens, resilient learners and inquisitive thinkers. These are woven throughout our curriculum planning and behaviour support.
- Our pupils have varying aptitudes and abilities; we are extremely proud of all their achievements and progress. Our pupils have a range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) including: Autism (ASC); Cognition and Learning needs; Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). We seek to ensure that, by the time they leave us, our pupils emerge as self-confident individuals able to manage their own learning, equipped with the skills and competencies to successfully take the next steps in their lives.
- We are a large staff with over 100 people working closely together to offer the best we can for our children. Despite the size, Westhaven has a calm and purposeful ethos where provision thrives to be of the highest standard. Despite being a large staff, we are also a team and all our staff members work together for the benefit of all in Westhaven.
- The teaching role itself is more akin to that of a primary teacher but with older students. The middle school team consists of 7 classes who share planning and resources but differentiate for their own classes and students. Each subject within the curriculum has a lead teacher and a second as well as an allocated SLT member. Ideally the candidate would be able to lead Geography or History but we are open to other subjects as we have a very wide curriculum offer.

You can find our safeguarding policy on our school website.
