Swimbridge is a small village four miles from the market town of Barnstaple in North Devon.  We are a small school set back off the roadside, just a         two-minute walk to the village centre, with views of the surrounding hills. Our original building dates back to 1866, but this had expanded over the years to provide new learning spaces and facilities for our children. Our on-site grounds are compact, providing three playgrounds and a woodland garden/Forest School area. Opposite our school building we have a large playing field, nature area, and the new village play park.

What makes Swimbridge School so special: we pride ourselves on our Christian Vision which aims to inspire, enable and educate for 'Life in all its Fullness' by teaching a   topic-based curriculum that contains high quality content, delivered through creative, rich and practical experiences; underpinned with the development of core academic skills in literacy and numeracy. We incorporate outdoor learning, visits, and visitors, together with hands on experience as much as possible in order to develop the whole child.

At Swimbridge School, we focus on our values – wisdom, hope, community, dignity and love, linking these to key learning behaviours, with the firm belief that a positive attitude to learning can make a huge difference to the progress of each child. When children have hope and aspire to do something well, they have the correct attitude to a learning activity and therefore grow in knowledge, wisdom and self-belief.

The children are encouraged to understand their thinking and to develop a growth mindset – never saying, ‘I can’t do this’… but always saying, ‘I can’t do this YET’ and we embed the importance of having the right attitude and focus on developing our learning behaviours in all that we do to ensure cohesion throughout the school.

In every class, at the beginning of each week, the children spend valuable curriculum time focussing on their personal learning goals. At the end of each week, they then have a dedicated session to evaluate and reflect on their progress. Throughout the school, the children are given age-appropriate Learning Behaviour Targets (linked to our school values) to work on.

We are part of the thriving Swimbridge Community, working closely with Swimbridge Pre-School,  St James’ Church, Swimbridge Nursing Home and the local village Green Team. Our community has the privilege of a wonderfully refurbished Village Hall, where many events take place.
