Class Teacher (Maternity Cover) job summary

About the role
The Castle Federation in Berkhamsted has two fantastic opportunities for teachers to join its teams at Victoria CE Infant and Nursery School and at Thomas Coram CE School, covering class teachers while they are on maternity leave.

Our schools pride themselves on providing a nurturing and stimulating environment in which children can flourish. As Church of England schools, we have a strong Christian ethos and values-based approach, aimed at developing the whole child and making our schools happy places to learn and work.

Victoria is a two-form entry infant school with a large nursery class and Thomas Coram is a four-form entry junior school. We have one governing body and work closely together. Our staff teams are strong and supportive and the successful candidates will be able to make a real difference.

We are looking for energetic and committed teachers, ideally with some experience, who will thrive in a creative, forward-thinking environment. The vacancy at Thomas Coram is in Year 4 and the vacancy at Victoria is in Year 2. Both are offered on a full-time basis, although applications from candidates interested in working 0.8 FTE at Victoria will also be considered.

Our schools are committed to safeguarding and to promoting children’s wellbeing. We expect staff and volunteers to share that commitment and successful candidates will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check.

Commitment to safeguarding

Our organisation is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. We expect all staff, volunteers and trustees to share this commitment.

Our recruitment process follows the keeping children safe in education guidance.

Offers of employment may be subject to the following checks (where relevant):
childcare disqualification
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)
medical
online and social media
prohibition from teaching
right to work
satisfactory references
suitability to work with children

You must tell us about any unspent conviction, cautions, reprimands or warnings under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975.

We are a Voluntary Aided school in the St. Albans Diocese and Local Authority of Hertfordshire. Our school is part of the Berkhamsted Schools’ pyramid and serves a mixed catchment.

The Thomas Coram CE School is part of the Castle Federation, with one of our partner infant schools, Victoria CE Infant and Nursery School. It is a friendly, supportive and welcoming 4 form entry junior school. In February 2018, OFSTED stated that the school ‘continues to be Good’ - 'Pupils are carefully nurtured from the moment they start. They behave very well and work hard'. Our Church School inspection in November 2019 confirmed we are an Excellent Anglican School (SIAMS).

We are a Voluntary Aided school in the St. Albans Diocese and Local Authority of Hertfordshire. Our school is part of the Berkhamsted Schools’ pyramid and serves a mixed catchment.

Although we are a church school, we welcome children from all faiths and no faith. Our core Christian values are respect, responsibility and friendship; these values were chosen by children, parents, staff and governors and we believe they are essential to enable every child to grow up as happy, secure and well-adjusted individuals. These values firmly underpin all that we do.

We aim to ensure that our young people succeed and become confident young adults, equipped for life in the 21st century. We look forward to working in partnership with parents, pupils and the wider community as we build on past successes and move confidently into the future.

The school is located on the Hemel Hempstead side of Berkhamsted and has easy access to London and the Chilterns. It serves the local community and surrounding villages.
