Class Teacher job summary
All our children have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Common needs include ADHD, ODD and Attachment. Some children may also have additional needs including ASC, Speech and Language and associated learning needs.
You will need to be energetic, flexible, be able to differentiate well, have boundless patience and great communication skills. You must have the strong ability to work with, and lead, a team of staff in support of two small groups of pupils (up to nine children per class). Children are generally grouped within their Key Stage.
Above all, you must be child-centred in your approach and have the enthusiasm, motivation and ability to work with, and engage, children who may not relate well to conventional teaching methods.
There is a strong emphasis on the nurture and care of our children combined with a significant focus on their social and emotional wellbeing. Staff work tirelessly to create a safe, inclusive and fun environment where children can receive the support they need to help overcome personal barriers and obstacles and to make progress with their learning.
Our children need you to be resilient, endlessly tolerant and to have a good sense of humour. On occasions the children can be physically challenging, and so they also need you to be physically fit/robust and trained in, or willing to be trained in, the use of Team Teach to help our children stay safe.
Commitment to safeguarding
Our organisation is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. We expect all staff, volunteers and trustees to share this commitment.
Our recruitment process follows the keeping children safe in education guidance.

Thomas Ashton School (www.thomasashton.tameside.sch.uk) is a KS1 – KS3 day community special school for boys and girls. We require a teacher who has a sound core and general subject knowledge and is comfortable delivering within a ‘primary curriculum’ model, and who has experience of working with children with identified needs around Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH). In the first instance it is likely the successful candidate will be based in Key Stage 3. If you can offer more, we would love to hear about it too!
