Classroom Supervisor job summary

What is the job of a Classroom Supervisor?

Classroom Supervisors work in schools providing assistance to teaching teams by supervising classes and ensuring students are working on tasks prepared by the teacher. They play a huge part in the running of the school by covering absent staff and by freeing up teaching staff to carry out essential marking, planning and preparation. The role has grown in recent years and almost every secondary school now employs Classroom Supervisors. It is a responsible and rewarding role and can be a great stepping stone into teacher training. What does the role of a Classroom Supervisor entail? A Classroom Supervisor is like a teacher in that they are in front of a class of children and are in charge of the classroom management. However, it is often easier to define the role by what a Classroom Supervisor does not do. Classroom Supervisors do not involve themselves with planning, preparation and marking of class work. What training can I expect? The school runs a comprehensive induction programme with on-going support and training from the Cover Manager and other Classroom Supervisors. We are committed to on-going professional development for all staff and there are many opportunities for staff to attend training sessions.
How can I use this role to get into teaching? We have an excellent record of appointing Classroom Supervisors for 1 to 2 years to provide an opportunity to gain classroom skills and experience prior to making an application for teacher training. Staff may go onto to train with Lord Williams's School or many other training providers.

Main Duties:

Support the absent class teacher by:

  • Supervising students undertaking work set by their teachers
  • Collecting finished work or homework as necessary and returning it to the class teacher
  • Promoting positive attitudes and high standards of behaviour, dealing promptly with conflicts and incidents using the school’s agreed Behaviour Policy
  • Reporting any behaviour issues or other matters in line with the school’s policy.

Support students by:

  • Establishing good working relationships with students, acting as a role model and setting high expectations of behaviour
  • Promoting and enabling the inclusion of all students within the classroom
  • Providing a consistent approach whilst responding to individual students’ needs
  • Rewarding achievement

Support the curriculum by:

  • Ensuring that students have the necessary equipment and resources to participate in the lesson.
  • Provide specific support to a Faculty when required

Support the school by:

Ensuring that all students have equal opportunities to learn and contributing to the overall ethos and aims of the school.

Providing effective support to other colleagues within the Cover Team and the wider school

When not undertaking cover supervision, cover supervisors should expect to be deployed in a range of activities which may include the following:

  • Invigilation of examinations/tests
  • Accompanying school trips
  • General administrative duties within the school including filing, photocopying, mounting displays etc.
  • Data entry onto the student database (SIMS) or other software as required

Please note that Candidates may be called for interview prior to the closing date.

Commitment to safeguarding

Lord Williams’s School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
All successful candidates will be subject to Disclosure and Barring Service checks along with other relevant employment checks.

Lord Williams’s School is a thriving and popular comprehensive school serving the Thame community and its surrounding rural area. We are a split-site school, with Years 7 – 9 on the Lower School site at Towersey Road and Years 10 – 13 on the Upper School site at Oxford Road. We pay particular attention to each individual student by promoting their personal, social and educational development to enable all to achieve at the highest level possible. As a result of our continuing success, Lord Williams’s School is consistently oversubscribed.

We promote high quality teaching and learning. We attract talented, committed and conscientious teachers who produce stimulating and challenging learning activities helped by experienced support staff. Teamwork is a key feature of our work.

We are an inclusive school; we cater for all abilities and we provide access for all students. This is reflected in our work with the more able, with students with a range of learning and other difficulties and in our admissions policy for the Sixth Form.

The school has excellent teaching facilities on both sites with accommodation that is suited to the demands of the curriculum.
