About The Leigh Academy

Maths Mastery: At The Leigh Academy, we have implemented Maths Mastery with our Key Stage 3 cohort. This is alongside the IB MYP programme to produce a rich Maths curriculum that is based in developing high levels of communication, problem solving, pattern finding and knowledge retention. We invest heavily so that staff have ongoing access to weekly high-quality professional development and a curriculum focused on developing conceptual understanding. Our curriculum is underpinned by research on task design, variation theory, concept development and raising achievement. Full training will be available to the successful candidate

As part of our STEM-based learning approach, problem-solving and employer links are at the heart of learning. With this approach we take pride in being extremely successful in all maths courses that we offer, boasting outstanding results in GCSE maths, Core maths, GCSE Resits, AS maths and Further maths with over 80% achieving A*-B at A-level Maths for the last two years.

With the recent changes in GCSE and A-level, we have ensured that all our staff are sufficiently prepared, by encouraging them to attend relevant professional development related to mastery and problem solving. Our department is fully equipped with practitioners that are engaging in the most pioneering developments in mathematical teaching, and even leading professional development in Core maths to other centres. Staff have also attended courses led by MEI and FMSP such as Teaching Advanced Maths, Teaching Further Maths, Teaching Statistics and GCSE Problem solving.

Working for The Leigh Academy: The Leigh Academy is a 'Good' secondary school at the heart of the community and our small school model ensures that each and every student gets the personal support and challenge they need to reach their full potential. The Academy is divided into four Colleges: Brunel, Chaucer, Darwin and Da Vinci - each has their own personality and range of specialisms, allowing them to be unique.

Overall, the academy is a dynamic and exciting place to work and the fantastic Leadership Team are committed to making it a great place to work for staff at all stages in their careers. Our award winning building and facilities are modern, light and airy and the open learning plazas and classrooms built around a day-lit wintergarden give the academy a unique and special character. It is also an academy that is conscious of its environment as it is brimming with sustainable innovations such as passive cooling, earth tubes and passive ventilation.

We can offer you the chance to be part of a strong and collaborative department not only within The Leigh Academy, but within the wider Trust as well. Full support will be provided and you'll have the tools and environment needed to teach in a way that works for you. We know that being a teacher can be both challenging and rewarding in equal measures and that you thrive on inspiring young adults and stimulating their curiosity. Working with Leigh Academies Trust: As of September 2019, our Trust is comprised of 25 geographically organised academies (11 secondaries, 13 primaries and 1 special) educating over 15,000 students, and employing over 2,500 talented staff. We also have three further academies in development phase, due to open between September 2020-2021. The Trust is establishing four ‘clusters’ of academies: North West Kent; Central Kent; South East London; Medway. In addition, the Trust is responsible for one of the region’s biggest initial teaching training providers and a large teaching school.

As part of Leigh Academies Trust you will have ample opportunity to collaborate with your peers both within the academy and across the whole Trust. This is an important part of our vision as we know through experience that we perform better when we work together.
