Communication Support Worker with BSL job summary

This role is to support a junior school age pupil access mainstream education, by providing support for pupil, which could involve 1:1 work, group work, whole class support, ensuring their safety and access to learning and to ensure that pupils are able to meet all the specified objectives detailed within their Education, Health and Care plan.

The role will provide communication support using British Sign Language to support mutual understanding and access to learning and inclusion and support each child according to their particular communication and learning needs.

The role will be based in a school, primarily in the main classroom, under the supervision of a class teacher.

The successful candidate will support children in accessing the National Curriculum and adjusting the level/type of support provided according to the needs of the child, e.g., filling in gaps in pupils’ background knowledge, relating new information to previous learning, teaching new vocabulary, working through tasks with pupils, or repeating/reinforcing information.

Through working with the class teacher and SENDCO, th e successful candidate will establish an appropriate learning environment and support in the planning and preparation of activities to meet the needs of the pupil. They will provide objective and accurate feedback, assessment and reports as required, to the teacher on pupil achievement, progress and other matters, ensuring the availability of appropriate evidence.

This is a term time only job, working for 38 weeks of the year, 32.5 hours per week. The working pattern will be 8.30am to 3.45pm Monday to Friday, with a 45 unpaid minute lunch break.
