Job Description

Purpose of Role

Responsible for the delivery of the catering service within a special school setting. Ensure efficient and effective management of allocated resources. Work flexibly across the catering portfolio as required.

Role expectations

Prioritising own activities within a series of allocated tasks so that tasks and duties are completed and delivered as instructed and delivered on time and to the required quality.

To be responsible for maintaining all food safety systems within the kitchen and ensure the cooking and preparation of food is in accordance with specified standards.

To ensure the maintenance of high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in the kitchen by strict adherence to Health and Safety Legislation and Food Hygiene Regulations and maintaining all associated records in accordance with the Trust’s policies and procedures.

To manage food allergies/intolerances/other special dietary requirements and associated administration. This includes blended diets for PEG feeding.

The ordering of food, effective stock control, and the maintenance of accurate stock records accounting for income and expenditure, together with the completion of all aspects of daily administration.

To work with the school, to create menus to meet pupil’s requirements and adhere to national food standards.

Managing Resources

Identifying, requesting, organising and using the resources, equipment and vehicles necessary for service delivery and ensuring the correct equipment/materials and/or services are available when needed.

There are sufficient resources on site for work and service users’ needs are met whilst completing the work to ensure compliance with the relevant regulations and procedures, this may involve the testing of relevant equipment to ensure safe usage. This will also include adhering to Health and Safety procedures and ensuring material and equipment is used safely with all relevant regulations and Service procedures being complied with.

Kitchen area is opened/closed on time and are secure.

Maintaining accurate relevant records in accordance with procedures.

Collating data for reports, as directed.

All necessary records are complete and accurate.

Key issues are flagged.

Data is provided for reports in a timely manner.

Procedures are complied with.

Making sure resources are used efficiently.

Taking receipt of deliveries from suppliers/contractors.

Qualification, knowledge , experience and expertise

Relevant qualification, equivalent experience or knowledge in the service work area.

Understand relevant procedures and practices.

Literate and numerate.

Committed to ongoing personal development.

Thorough understanding of service delivery area.

Working knowledge of materials/equipment/services (used in the work situations), their safe use and application circumstances.

Planning capability to prepare work programmes and control expenditure.

Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures, including, where appropriate, how to use a variety of materials and equipment.

Hold relevant food hygiene certificates.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Experience:

Minimum of 2 years’ experience of working in a catering kitchen

Good cooking skills and ability to follow prescribed menus

A clear understanding of working with children (knowledge of the dietary needs of children with SEND)

Level 2 Food Hygiene

Good numeracy & literacy and ability to use ICT and manage a budget

Good verbal communication skills

Knowledge of relevant Health & Safety Requirements

Awareness and compliance with relevant Health & Safety procedures.

Ability to work with others as part of a team.

Knowledge & Understanding:

Able to lead a kitchen team, understanding the kitchen facility

The ability to communicate well in both verbal and written format with a good level of numeracy and literacy

Good ICT skills

Understanding of healthy eating and dietary requirements including allergen information

Ability to manage a budget and report on statistical information

Personal Qualities

To be a kind and dedicated person who is prepared to develop the kitchen facility and menu offering at the school.

To work as part of a wider team across the Northern Hub to produce a healthy balanced menu for our pupils. To work with our students and their independent dietary needs to ensure the best possible daily offering.
