Corpus Christi Catholic High School in Preston, Lancashire, has become a school of choice for parents, following the publication of an exceptionally positive Ofsted report in February 2019. In recent months the school has been inundated with admissions requests from parents wanting their children to benefit from the high expectations and strong Catholic ethos that were commended by inspectors.
To accommodate this increase in numbers, the school is planning to increase the number of classes for September 2020 and recruit additional staff.
The Ofsted report showed that inspectors were particularly impressed by the school’s pupils. Their good manners, good behaviour, respect for each other and keenness to learn were all praised in the report. Inspectors commented that ‘There is a calm and purposeful atmosphere around the school. Pupils are friendly and polite’.
Leaders at the school believe that improvements in the quality of teaching have had a strong impact on attendance. ‘Attendance has improved’ noted inspectors, ’because pupils enjoy coming to school’.
Facilities at Corpus Christi have also undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years. As well as adding new science laboratories and a new drama studio to a building that was already equipped with outstanding facilities, pupils have recently been provided with a huge garden area to the rear of the school. Inspired by the work of Charles Jencks, ‘the garden’ includes paths, seating, borders and an area for outdoor chess.
Governors and staff were delighted with the recognition that they received from Ofsted, but they are ambitious for the next phase of the school’s development and determined to do all that is needed to ensure that every pupil at Corpus Christi experiences a quality of education that is outstanding.
