DEPUTY HEAD job summary

Leading – specific responsibilities for leadership in the School

• To share with the Head teacher, the deputy and Governors the management and running the School by helping to produce clear aims, effective policies and strategic planning.
• Demonstrate and support an ambitious vision for the school and strive for high expectations for every pupil by setting high standards and leading by example in all areas of work.
• Constantly evaluate the strengths and weaknesses in the school with the SLT and use the findings to actively promote improvement, ensuring that a thorough understanding of the school’s performance, staff and pupils’ skills and attributes are present
• Develop leadership capacity through CPD and work effectively at all times with the Head teacher, the deputy and the governing body, parents, members of staff and other schools as representative of the SLT
• Work together in the SLT to effectively develop strategies and promote and sustain an effective leadership model that is focused on the rigorous implementation of improvement plans
• Ensure that all members of staff recognise and fulfil their statutory responsibilities to pupils
• Ensure that a consistent approach to policies and procedures is adhered to
• As part of the SLT undertake, development and management of activities relating to the curriculum to pursue excellence for the school.
• Work closely with other leaders to ensure effective transition across phases and ensure as phase leader that statutory assessments are carried out in a timely manner
• To assist with the selection and appointment of staff to the school and coordinate and manage the appointments of ITT, NQTs, NVQ’s work experience and students across the school.
• To effectively manage and deploy teaching and support staff including specialist behaviour TA’s and MDS, financial and physical resources within the school to support the delivery of the curriculum
• To assist with cover of Teaching and Support Staff alongside other leaders in school, in order to ensure smooth running of the school

Leading, Teaching and Learning - Specific Responsibilities
• To lead the subject of English across the school, ensuring staff are confident in delivering quality English lessons, leading to an increased % pupils achieving ARE and GD at each key stage

• Be responsible for the overall quality of Teaching and Learning in KS1 ensuring that effective learning takes place and provides high levels of achievement

• To monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of Teaching and Learning within KS1 under the direction of the Senior Leadership Team; provide evidence to support judgements made around Teaching and Learning and feed this back to the Senior Leadership Team

• Be the lead teacher within KS1, setting high expectations, providing support and advice to colleagues within the phase to ensure high levels of achievement by pupils

• Lead 1:1 developmental sessions for Teachers within KS1 to ensure targets set within Teacher enhancement plans are being achieved in-line with Teacher Standards and provide feedback to the Senior Leadership Team in order to support the appraisal process

Leading, Achievement- Specific Responsibilities
• To have an overview of whole school achievement of English with a responsibility for achievement of pupils in KS1

• Facilitate termly pupil progress meetings for Teachers working within KS1

• To provide a termly analysis of attainment and progress data to the Senior Leadership Team with a particular focus on DA pupils

• Liaise with KS1 and EYFS Leaders to facilitate half termly moderation meetings

• Ensure effective assessment systems are fully embedded and promote high standards of achievement in KS1

Leading, Inclusion (alongside the SENDco) - Specific Responsibilities
• To work alongside the SENDco, to ensure that individual pupil needs are met through effective implementation of support plans

• To ensure that intervention timetables are established in order to meet the needs of the pupils on the SEND register

• To ensure that all staff within your phase deliver high quality intervention, providing support and training when necessary

Leading, Behaviour -Specific Responsibilities
• Take a lead role in managing behaviour within KS1 including: classrooms and corridors, during lunchtimes, break times and other transitional periods

• Provide support and training to staff when necessary to ensure that all behaviour is well managed in line with school policy

Leading, General Organisation- Specific Responsibilities
• To ensure that staffing is sufficient and organised during unstructured times including break time and lunchtime

• To ensure that timetables are implemented and adhered to across KS1

• To co-ordinate assemblies alongside the other deputy head, ensuring good coverage of themes throughout the year
