What skills and experience we're looking for
An exciting opportunity has arisen for someone to have a significant positive impact on the lives of our students as Deputy Headteacher (Student Development, Wellbeing and Safeguarding). This post is an important strategic and operational role in the life of our school community, and the successful candidate will be a key leader of the cultural development of our school.
That culture, and everything we do, is underpinned by our values of Aspiration, Kindness and Resilience. These values guide our actions and help us bring our motto, Excellence with Integrity, to life. We would like to appoint someone who embodies those values in the way they work with young people to lead our pastoral provision.
At Challoner’s we take great pride in the quality of our pastoral care for individual students, and our child-centred approach to their learning and development. This sits with our focus on character education and wellbeing in support of excellent academic progress. The post holder will be expected to take a share of the leadership responsibility for our character education plans.
Delivering high quality pastoral care in support of learning is the responsibility of the whole staff, led by the SLT, and this role presents an opportunity to lead and develop it over time. The successful delivery of this will remain everyone’s responsibility, but direct and explicit leadership of this from the post holder will be a key method for consistent and cohesive outcomes.
What the school offers its staff
Similarly, the development of good character in support of learning is a whole school strategy that requires clear leadership, something in which the postholder will be expected to play a key part.
The successful candidate will work extremely closely with the Headteacher and Senior Team to ensure that the school’s Vision, Values & Strategies are coherently delivered through actions by all staff in school, and that standards of academic progress, behaviour and character are high. Whilst the responsibilities shown in this pack are the key areas associated with the role there can be some flexibility around the finalised responsibilities, to be discussed with the successful applicant. Candidates’ academic specialism will have no bearing on the appointment decision, though we expect our Deputy Heads to teach in the region of 8 hours a week.
Dr Challoner’s has 1371 students, of which 449 are in the Sixth Form. In November 2019 the school was judged to be Outstanding in a full section 5 inspection under the new Education Inspection Framework. It is regarded as one of the leading grammar schools in the country. As lead in the Teaching School Hub - Buckinghamshire, we provide an exciting range of professional development opportunities.
We also offer:
- engaging, able and well-motivated students
- an innovative approach to learning
- outstanding facilities in every subject
- a friendly working environment
