What skills and experience we're looking for

Training and Qualifications

  • Qualified teacher status
  • Honours degree or equivalent
  • Professional Awards towards leadership (e.g. NPQH)
  • Higher Degree
  • Recent participation in a range of relevant in-service training in the area of Quality of Education

Leadership Experience

  • Successful recent experience of senior whole school leadership at least at Assistant Headteacher level or equivalent, with proven track record of impact on outcomes, and leadership of Quality of Education initiatives.
  • A Proven track record of leadership, demonstrating positive outcomes at Key Stage 4 for all pupils, particularly Disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND, demonstrating school-wide outcomes that are at least in-line with National Average.
  • Effective engagement with learners and others in the local community, including parents, carers, employers and local services.
  • Experience of developing whole school strategies to improve outcomes for all, including disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND.
  • Proven track record of leadership of assessment for learning, and the use of performance data to lead school improvement with positive outcomes.
  • Experience of defining and implementing sound principles and practices of performance management for all staff, with positive outcomes for young people.
  • Evidence of improving outcomes through collaboration with other schools/academies and school improvement agencies.
  • Recent participation in a range of relevant in-service training in the area of Quality of Education

  • Have a clear and ambitious vision for providing high-quality, inclusive education for all, with a working knowledge and understanding of the principles of the SEND code of practice
  • Set high standards and expectations and inspire others to achieve them
  • Experience of raising achievement through improving teaching and learning strategies that are inclusive for all
  • Experience of designing and implementing an ambitious and inclusive curriculum (academic, creative and/or vocational)
  • Committed to giving all learners the knowledge and cultural capital needed to go on to destinations that meet their interests and aspirations
  • Experience of creating an environment that allows learners to develop their character, including their resilience, confidence and good mental and physical health
  • Have high expectations for learners’ behaviour, conduct and attendance, and model this to all staff
  • Maintain relationships among learners and staff to reflect a positive and respectful culture
  • Build positive relationships with staff and is committed to their professional development and well being, whilst challenging inaction and underperformance
  • Able to work with Governors to translate vision into agreed objectives, measures, operational plans and policies
  • Uphold a strong culture of safeguarding where members of the school community feel safe and do not tolerate bullying or discrimination
  • Ability to raise standards through motivating supporting and challenging colleagues.

Professional Knowledge

  • A working knowledge and understanding of the Education Endowment Foundation’s meta-research, and the recommendations for improving the Quality of Education.
  • A working understanding of “Walkthrus” as a methodology for developing excellent teaching and learning practice.
  • Leadership-level understanding of Keeping Children Safe in Education, and the impact of the wider-world on children and young people’s lives and academic progress.
  • Knowledge of Human Resources practice and recruitment relating to effective school management.
  • Knowledge of national policies, priorities and statutory frameworks, with a particularly deep understanding of the Ofsted Inspection Framework.
  • Knowledge of and commitment equality and diversity for all.
  • Knowledge of current issues and research in education locally, nationally and internationally where appropriate.

Personal Qualities

  • Passionate about education including the development of the ‘whole child’ with a philosophy for education based upon care and enjoyment of learning.
  • Humility, especially following setbacks, with proactive attitude to moving forward.
  • Ability to communicate a vision confidently, clearly and passionately to lead and inspire others, especially with regard Quality of Education.
  • Reflective, resilient and decisive, with a no-excuses attitude to school improvement.
  • Able to reach and justify difficult decisions.
  • Able to challenge and motivate underachievers.

  • Able to build trust and confidence in self and others.
  • Able to write reports articulately, and with clarity.
