Deputy Leader English job summary
Purpose:
• To support the Subject Lead in driving standards of scholastic excellence in subject area.
• To deputise for the Subject Lead in their absence.
• To be responsible for developing classroom learning strategies and practice and interventions in order to raise achievement in subject area.
• To be accountable for students meeting expected progress or beyond.
• To monitor classroom progress of pupils in subject area and take appropriate action classroom based actions in order to impact upon progress of pupils beyond those directly assigned.
• To develop schemes of work and planning in the curriculum area.
• To develop and enhance the teaching practice of others and support performance management requirements, including PGCE, Schools Direct, RQTs, NQTs.
• To assist with induction to ensure smooth transition into each key stage.
• To act as lead teacher for a specific team improvement strand.
• To provide and safeguard the welfare of the students for whom the post holder is responsible or comes into contact with.
Line-manage:
• Leaders, teaching staff and other relevant personnel within subject area.
Liaising with:
• SLT, Subject leaders, Scholastic Excellence Year Leaders, Student Support Services, relevant staff with cross-school responsibilities, relevant support staff and parents.
Duties – General:
• Work in accordance with the school’s statement of aims and values and implement strategies within policies adopted by governing body.
• Help to raise achievement and aspirations of the pupils by providing challenge, opportunity and recognizing and celebrating successes.
• Liaise effectively with parents, external agencies and Governors.
• Carry out the general and specific professional duties as set out in the current ‘School teachers pay and conditions document’, QTS standards and school documentation for classroom teacher and tutor
• To play a full part in the life of the school community, to support its distinctive mission and ethos and to encourage and ensure staff and students to follow this example.
Duties – Specific:
The following roles and responsibilities are not exhaustive, but give an outline of the tasks the post holder is responsible for. They do not necessarily carry out all the tasks themselves, but they ensure that the tasks are being completed
• Ensuring the Faculty scheme of work identifies appropriate assessment strategies both formative and summative.
• Lead on the development of AfL strategies within the area to ensure progress in lessons is at least good.
• Identifying trends and patterns in data (full analysis of examination performance, which modules are successful, which pupils, which groups and where is value-added at its best – and why) and take appropriate classroom based actions on issues arising from data, systems and reports: reviewing progress on actions taken with relevant staff.
• Ensuring that effective classroom based interventions takes place and impact is measured.
• Providing teaching and learning information to inform and assist the Subject Leader with setting arrangements.
• Modeling through being proactive in terms of developing effective classroom strategies and their effect on performance/progress.
• Assisting the Subject Leader in day-to-day issues – developing and implementing policies, construction and monitoring of team improvement plan, behaviour management, undertaking monitoring and evaluation activities to ensure effectiveness of teaching and learning in raising standards.
• Ensuring staff within the subject area receive appropriate CPD in line with their professional entitlement and act as a point of contact for support for staff.
• To advise and support staff in the area to develop assessment for learning strategies and incorporate best practice in SOW.
• To contribute to the writing of schemes of work in the curriculum area and to ensure the development of subjects within faculty is in line with national developments.
• To undertake performance management reviews and act as reviewer to designated staff in the curriculum area.
• To work with Subject Leader to ensure staff development needs are identified and that appropriate programmes are designed to meet such needs.
• To lead the development of subject links with partner schools and the community, attendance as necessary at liaison events and effective promotion of subjects at Open Evenings and other events.
• To be a lead teacher for specific subject/aspect of department work.
General:
• Be aware of the Data Protection Act and other legislation to ensure confidentially of records and information.
Safeguarding:
• This post is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
• The post holder must be committed to safeguarding the welfare of children and to providing equality of opportunity.
• Record and report concerns following the Trust Safeguarding policy.
• Complete safeguarding level 1 training at least once every three years.
Health and Safety:
• Be aware of the responsibility for personal health, safety and welfare and that of others who may be affected by your actions or inactions.
• Co-operate with the employer on all issues to do with Health, Safety and Welfare.
• Ensure all aspects of Health and Safety are rigorously addressed across your department inclusive but not limited to:
o Reporting damaged, broken or missing equipment/property to an appropriate person i.e. departmental link, site team, headteacher etc.
