Director of Design, Engineering and Technology job summary

A rare and exciting opportunity to lead the Design, Engineering and Technology department at UTC Reading. We specialise in Engineering and Computer Science for 14-18 year olds so this role presents the opportunity to transform lives through learning for young people who are within the final years of their formal education and preparing for the world of work and adult life. UTC Reading is a thriving environment within an ambitious and forward-thinking MAT, Activate Learning Education Trust who currently support four University Technical Colleges and two Secondary Schools in the Thames Valley.

We are looking for a versatile and motivated leader or aspiring leader to work with and develop a high performing team of staff to deliver the Design, Engineering and Technology courses to KS4 and 6th form students. Whilst leading your team, you will collaborate with other subject directors across the UTC to ensure our overall curriculum offer remains focused and responsive to the needs of the employers and industries we work with, whilst maintaining a high quality of education throughout. Employer engagement is a vital part of our DNA at the UTC. As Director you will be expected to connect and engage with local, national, and international companies to ensure that the DTE curriculum is relevant, connected and enriched by those in industry.

The ideal candidate will have experience of Design, Engineering and Technology subjects within the educational settings and be excited about connecting the work of employers and industry partners with education.

Absolute musts for this role:

  • Enthusiasm for your subject and its real-world applications
  • A self-starter, able to work independently but with a well-developed understanding of the need for team communication and leadership
  • A desire to deliver the most memorable, engaging, and career-relevant learning experiences that you can
  • A team player who wants to contribute strongly to the evolution of the courses, facilities and our ‘real world’ links
  • Passionate about the creation of the next generation of professional engineers
  • Have an “I can’t do it (yet)” mentality

At UTC Reading we are renowned for the strong links between our courses and the real world of Design, Engineering and Technology in industry, academia and the armed services. This role offers the opportunity to utilise your own ‘real world’ links and experience and to develop industry-linked skills with us, be it using industry-standard equipment, arranging external experts to present or run curriculum projects with class groups, running industry visits, or attending our annual teacher industry placements.

Up for the challenge? Then let’s talk!

All students at UTC Reading specialise in either Engineering, Computing or STEM; in KS4 they also study a focused and responsive curriculum linked to these specialisms. In the 6th Form the curriculum becomes more specialist where students can study one of three routes: Technical, Hybrid, or A Level. In the technical route they will either study a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering or Computing. In the Hybrid Route, they will study a technical qualification in engineering or computing alongside two A Levels. In the A Level route they will study 3 A Levels. Each year we educate 500 young people so the opportunity to influence and impact is significant.

This an incredible time to be joining our trust as a leader. As well as our four UTCs, (Reading, Heathrow, Swindon and Oxfordshire) we also have two comprehensive schools, Theale Green School and The Bicester School. The vision of ALET is ‘Transforming Lives Through Learning’ and each of our schools and UTCs are uniquely placed to deliver this vision for every member of the communities they serve. By joining our trust, not only will you have an opportunity transform the lives of young people, but you will also have the chance to transform yours through collaborative working and professional development opportunities to help you progress in your career.

If you believe that this is an environment where you can thrive, develop and substantially contribute to an exciting future for UTC Reading and ALET then you are encouraged to explore further by contacting the Deputy Head of School – Jennie Thomson, via jessica.bryant@utcreading.org.uk for a more detailed discussion, if required.

Completed application forms and an accompanying supporting letter should be emailed no later than midday on Tuesday 4th October to: jessica.bryant@utcreading.org.uk. Interviews and assessments for the role will take place w/c 10th October 2022.

We are an equal opportunities employer and are committed to the safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check.

UTC stands for University Technical College, an innovative new approach to learning for 14 – 19 year olds that offers specialist programmes alongside traditional subjects, such as English, Maths and Science.

A UTC is different from an average school because it has more support and backing from the local business community and has high profile industry partners involved in the development of the curriculum. Other more traditional academic partners are also involved to make sure that UTCs really can offer the best of both worlds.
