Director of Estates and Sustainability

Job Purpose

To provide leadership and be responsible for all the Trust’s Estate, including safety, compliance, operational and financial management. Ensuring the successful and cost-effective delivery of capital projects, refurbishment, maintenance and driving the Trusts sustainability programme.
Location

Colchester Sixth Form College or Long Road, Cambridge. (The successful candidate can be based at either site but must be prepared to spend a significant amount of time at each college, dependent upon estate’s needs).
Salary

£60,051- £69,864 pa subject to skills and experience (pro rata for part time)

The postholder will also be working in close collaboration with each college Principal and will be expected to liaise with and report to them on progress against key plans, to oversee the management of key plans and projects and provide updates as required.

Line Manage

Line Manage the colleges’ individual Estate Managers in collaboration with the relevant College Principals.

Role Overview

Working in partnership with the Trust’s leadership teams, you will develop, implement and lead on a MAT-wide estate development strategy to ensure an effective, efficient, smart and safe estate for all. You will lead on capital projects, oversee maintenance programs, and ensure compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements.

You will develop and oversee strategies to reduce our environmental impact, work towards net zero and help the MAT become more sustainable across all our activities.

Working closely with the Chief Finance Officer, you will ensure high quality and value for money performance from all estate contracts and suppliers

This role requires a strategic thinker with excellent organisational, communication and problem-solving skills and with the ability to lead projects from inception to completion and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders. Key attributes include flexibility, adaptability, a proactive mindset and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

Key Responsibilities

Develop, implement and lead on a MAT-wide estate development strategy to ensure an effective and efficient estate/facilities which meet stakeholders’ needs.
Lead the development and implementation of sustainability strategies to reduce the Trust’s environmental impact across energy consumption, waste management, transportation, procurement, and building operations and work with each college to promote sustainable practices across the Trust.
Develop and implement a long-term maintenance and refurbishment programme and oversee the regular maintenance and cleanliness of each college.

Lead on capital estates and building projects, including tendering, procurement, planning, and contractor management.
Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including fire safety and asbestos management.
Manage the budget(s) and financial aspects of estates projects within the framework of the Trust's Financial Regulations, policies and procurement procedures, ensuring best value at all times.
Develop and maintain records for audit, asset management, and compliance purposes.
Take all reasonable and practicable steps to ensure the estate across the Trust is both inclusive and accessible.
Provide specialist and strategic advice on estates/building options to enable the Trust to develop and grow its services to students, staff and other stakeholders.
Maintain a comprehensive and up-to-date database and graphical information system of the Trust’s entire estate and take responsibility for the accuracy of the Trust’s estate data submissions.
Work closely with the Chief Finance Officer to submit bids for capital funding ( (e.g Condition Improvement Funding).
Collaborate with external bodies such as the local authority, particularly the Planning Department.

The role will be based at the Sixth Form College Colchester or Long Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge. Alternatively, some home working may be agreed. Substantial part- time work would also be considered. The role will require regular travel and time spent at each of colleges in line with Trust needs and in order for the post holder to discharge their duties. which includes line management of the individual colleges’ Estates Managers.

Qualifications

A foundation degree or higher and professional qualifications.

Health and safety experience.

Project Management Qualification and/or accreditation by professional bodies such as NEBOSH BIFM, RICS, or CABE
Strong knowledge of relevant ICT packages

Diploma in Health or Safety

Management
A strong background in facilities and estates management, including a minimum of 3-5 years in a managerial or operational role.

Expertise in managing budgets and external contracts

Estates

Substantial experience in strategic estates management, including leading projects and managing contractors.

A comprehensive understanding of building systems and statutory regulations

Experience in an educational setting is advantageous

Skills

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, strategic problem-solving abilities, and proficiency in IT and data management.
