Director of Learning Zone/Head of Science job summary

Are you ready to inspire and lead? At Co-op Academy Manchester, we are seeking a dynamic Head of Science to guide curriculum, foster collaboration, and elevate student outcomes! As part of Co-op Academies Trust, you will have the opportunity to innovate, inspire, and raise achievement levels across the school while working within a supportive leadership team.

Our aim is to ensure that our students are given every opportunity to reach their full potential, regardless of their background. With this in mind, we are looking to appoint a teacher who shares our vision for a learning environment and curriculum that is ambitious as well as supportive and nurturing.

As well as academic success, we focus on and take great pride in our students' behaviour. We aim for high achievement in an environment which is based on rewards, not sanctions. Working closely with our teaching body, our caring and experienced pastoral team are always on hand to help and support our students through their secondary school journey.

You’ll do all this whilst capturing the spirit of our vision and values and whilst role-modelling exceptional professional behaviours.

Why us?

At Co-op Academy Manchester, we are committed to providing a dynamic and engaging learning environment that fosters innovation, creativity, and academic excellence. We strive to prepare students for the ever-evolving world. Our school has a reputation for excellence in both teaching and outstanding facilities, and we're looking for a dedicated Head of Science to join our vibrant team. The post would suit somebody with previous experience in a busy Science department who is looking for that next level of challenge/progression.

Applicants must have a good level of literacy and numeracy skills. Successful candidates will be expected to be fully involved in academy activities. Additional responsibilities would be discussed dependent upon the experience and qualifications of the applicants.

The academy, based in Higher Blackley in North Manchester, has over 1,600 students on roll and is part of Co-op Academies Trust.

Co-op Academy Manchester was recently judged ‘Good’ by Ofsted in March 2023. Ofsted said that:

“Leaders, trustees and governors strive for all pupils at Co-op Academy Manchester to be successful. Pupils are encouraged to demonstrate the ‘ways of being Co-op’ in all that they do.”

“Teachers have strong subject knowledge. They use their expertise to help pupils to learn well in lessons. Teachers who are not specialists in a subject receive appropriate and effective subject-specific training. This enables these teachers to deliver the curriculum equally well.”

“Leaders have thought carefully about the curriculum that they want all pupils to learn, including those with SEND. The curriculum is well organised. Subject leaders have thought deeply about the key knowledge that pupils should learn and the order in which this content should be taught.”

We are looking for colleagues who are up for a challenge; who want to make a real difference to the lives of the children they work with; who are committed to their own professional development and who want to be outstanding teachers, classroom assistants, administrators, leaders, and support workers across a wide range of roles in our academy.

All our values are based upon the values of the Co-op Group, which will inform our behaviours.

Self-help: We do not expect to be spoon fed – we will try to do things for ourselves in the right way and at the right time.

Self-responsibility: Everyone should act in a responsible way around the academy site and in the local community. We take responsibility for our own learning; we want to become independent learners.

Equality: We are proud to be part of a very multicultural academy, with students from all over the world; it is important that we treat each other with respect and accept that others may be different from ourselves. We should all of us have equal chances to succeed.

Equity: We want to look for the best in each other. Rewarding others fairly to encourage all types of achievement.

Democracy: We will contribute our ideas to make the academy a success.

Solidarity: We can achieve more by working together, rather than as individuals.

Our Values

Being part of the Co-operative Group, we are both guided and driven by the Co-op values which are embedded in everything that we do within our Academy - We strive to demonstrate the following ethical values in everything we do - they are our ‘Ways of Being’:

Succeed together

Do what matters most

Be yourself, always

Show you care

So, if you believe in our values, we would love to hear from you!

We offer a wide range of benefits and rewards to recognise the part you play in our success:
