We are recruiting an enthusiastic and motivated maternity cover teacher to teach or (if the right candidate) lead the provision of Drama at Bedford Free School. We require an excellent practitioner who is also keen to get involved in the wider life of the school and can really inspire our pupils.
RESPECT, HONESTY, HIGH EXPECTATIONS
At BFS our values drive everything we do and as a result our teachers enjoy impeccable behaviour in lessons and hardworking, highly motivated pupils. BFS is a genuinely comprehensive school that provides a knowledge-based education for pupils of all backgrounds. We teach an unashamedly academic curriculum consisting of the best that has been thought and said.
PARENTAL CHOICE
With waiting lists in each year group and 2024 GCSE results placing us amongst the top schools in the country for progress, we are a hugely popular school. Demand for places is very high as parents want the combination of a BFS education and our distinctive small school feel for their children.
THE DEPARTMENT
Drama is a very popular subject currently taught by four members of staff (two of whom are also Senior Leaders). Four groups currently study GCSE. At Key Stage Three there is currently an exciting and broad curriculum which places an emphasis on the key fundamentals of practical drama skills alongside core knowledge including the history of drama to the present day. The aim is that by the end of Key Stage 3 all pupils gain a comprehensive understanding of Greek theatre, commedia dell’arte, melodrama, 4 different theatre practitioners, script study and devising. The drama department presently offers a range of extracurricular opportunities for pupils including an annual whole school musical, various showcases across the academic year, ‘BFS’ got talent’ and trips to see live theatre.
At BFS we value and respect subject specialism and strive to create the environment where teachers can get on and teach the subjects which they love and are expert in. You will benefit from the existing strong, well-resourced, knowledge-rich drama curriculum already in place and would be expected to lead all aspects of the department’s efforts to further refine and improve planning and delivery of a fantastic curriculum. GCSE results were good in Drama in 2024 and we continually aim to improve outcomes for our pupils.
SUPPORT AND DEVELOPMENT
At Bedford Free School we invest heavily in professional learning, which alongside support and coaching from our senior leadership team, and access to expertise across Advantage Schools, means you can develop to be your very best.
We have no unwieldy marking policies; our pupils’ behaviour is impeccable supported by same-day whole-school sanctions where necessary and Senior Leaders have a very high profile to ensure that you are supported to develop.

Set up in 2012 by local teachers and parents, Bedford Free School exists to offer families a choice in Bedford.
Bedford Free School is a unique school with a fantastic educational offer. We really do believe that our pupils can go on to achieve extraordinary things. In our young history, we have proved they can and we are now one of the highest performing secondary schools not only in the area, but in the country.
BFS is a small school of only around 500 pupils, so staff get to know each pupil as an individual and we have a family feel. This allows us to encourage, demand and collectively strive for academic and personal success.
We believe that all pupils deserve a ‘grammar-school’ style education, with access to an academic curriculum, strong discipline, high expectations and access to highly selective universities, and a wide range of extra-curricular activities.
