Drum Kit and Percussion Teacher job summary

The Latymer School is a selective, co-educational grammar school in North London with an outstanding musical tradition and excellent facilities. We are seeking an experienced and inspirational Drum Kit and Percussion Teacher to join our large team of visiting music teachers as soon as possible.

The successful applicant will be an experienced performer and outstanding teacher who enjoys working with young people and who has considerable experience of working with teenage musicians, from beginner to advanced. The ability to work effectively as part of a team is vital and it is likely that the successful applicant will have prior experience of working in a secondary school environment. They will have experience of preparing students for ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall examinations and be able to work with students preparing for GCSE and A level performances. Their knowledge of repertoire will be extensive, and they will be able to advise on maintenance and purchase of instruments.

About 400 instrumental and singing lessons take place every week in school – including a total of three days of drum kit and percussion teaching. Initially there will be one day of teaching per week for the successful applicant and we expect that they will be able to offer some Percussion Ensemble coaching in the future. The current hourly rate for instrumental tuition is £45.66.

There is strong uptake of Music at GCSE and A level - typically at least 30 and 10 students per year respectively. Our extensive extra-curricular programme includes five orchestras, various choirs and bands. Opportunities for percussionists include participation in Concert Winds, Wind Orchestra, Sinfonia and Symphony Orchestra, as well as in student-led groups. There is a wide range of concerts and other music events across the year, some involving as many as 400 performers. Our recent Instrumental and Vocal Performance Competition saw 200 entries across four levels of ability; the external adjudicator for the Open Category Finals commented, “I was overwhelmed by the standard of musicianship in every category [and] the lovely atmosphere of support.” Following a recent Latymer concert, a parent commented, “I was absolutely blown away by the number of students participating and the quality of the performances - it’s really extraordinary that all this was achieved in just a few weeks. It was so wonderful to see such a range of ensembles.”

A suitable candidate may be appointed before the closing date, so an early application is advised. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to interview; part of the process will include a short drum kit lesson with one of our pupils.

Further information about the school is available on the school's website.
