The School
Matthew Arnold is a thriving community school on the outskirts of Oxford and we are looking to appoint a EAL Coordinator. This is Fixed -Term position for 12 months initially, which may be extended based on specific funding.
Matthew Arnold is an oversubscribed inclusive 11-18 school of over 1,300 pupils that serves a mix of urban and rural communities across the west side of Oxford. The school prides itself on being a high achieving school with increasing rates of progress for our disadvantaged students. This has been achieved by focusing on improving outcomes for every student and continuing staff development.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Learning for students
- Assessing the baseline abilities of learners with EAL on entry and use this to inform induction processes and teaching strategies based on individual need
- Coordinate and lead individual and group interventions for identified students
- Evaluating the impact of these approaches through careful monitoring of the attainment and achievement of learners with EAL across the school
- Developing and disseminate inclusive practice for learners with EAL, keeping abreast of development in EAL teaching and learning
- Share information about learners with EAL that will support teachers in meeting the needs of these students
- Work with individuals and groups of students to accelerate their acquisition of English and support access to the curriculum - in lessons or in interventions
- Promote effective strategies for the acquisition of increasing levels of competence and to review and record progress, set targets and report on progress
Communication
- Build effective working relationships with other departments where appropriate, including liaising with colleagues about pastoral issues concerning learners with EAL
- Attend pre-admission meetings and assess mid-term admission pupils
- Contribute to the staff bulletin with relevant information
Care, Guidance and Suppor
- Play a full part in the life of the school community, to support its distinctive culture and ethos and to encourage staff and students to follow this example
- Promote actively the school’s corporate policies and to comply with the school’s Health and Safety policy
- comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person
- Support difference and ensure equal opportunities for all
- Appreciate and support the role of other professionals
- Attend and participate in relevant meetings as required
- Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required
- Seek to develop the values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs within the school community
- Contribute fully to the school’s safeguarding policy and procedures and attend regular safeguarding training
