What skills and experience we're looking for

Are you an innovative, creative teacher driven to provide the best possible education for young people with special needs?

We are looking for a creative teacher with an interest in special needs education to join us at Garratt Park School.

  • You might be a specialist in English or Drama
  • You may be an ECT or an experienced teacher
  • You might be from a secondary, primary or special needs background.
  • You will need to be an excellent classroom practitioner who is able to teach students at different levels. English is taught throughout the school. Drama is taught to all students in KS3 and as an option in KS4 and KS5. Students are accredited through GCSE, Level 1 Awards, Entry Level Certificates and Performing Arts Award.
  • You will need to be able to adapt your teaching to meet the needs of students with a range of additional needs.
  • We are a small school, so the ability to teach other subjects would also be an advantage.

What the school offers its staff

“Staff are proud to work at the school. They say that leaders consider their well-being and that they have the support and training they need to do their job.” (Ofsted 2024)

We provide all of our staff with a comprehensive training programme, including delivering on site, trauma-informed, crisis prevention training (CPI). This means that our school remains ‘calm and welcoming’ . We understand the demands of working in an SEN school so we provide all staff with 30 minutes ‘Administration & Development’ every day, in addition to their statutory PPA. We have a supportive body of staff and everyone is automatically a member of the Employee Benefit Scheme with a range of external support and discount offers.

Garratt Park School is a special school for children and young people aged 11-19 who have moderate learning difficulties, along with other special needs disabilities including Autism, SCLN, sensory impairments and a small number with more complex needs. We are situated in the inner London borough of Wandsworth and most of our students come from the local area, from diverse backgrounds with around one third entitled to free school meals. Earlsfield is well served by public transport with easy access to the city centre.

Interested candidates are encouraged to visit our friendly and welcoming school. Please contact Janice Button at recruitment@garrattpark.wandsworth.sch.uk to arrange this.

We are a special school for students aged 11-19 with moderate learning difficulties. Around half have ASD, and one third have input from our own speech and language and occupational therapy team. They are from a diverse range of cultures and backgrounds: more than half are from ethnic minority groups, and nearly half attract pupil premium.

We are located near Earlsfield station, which has excellent links with central London and Surrey. The local area is culturally rich.

Our chief aims are:

To prepare our students for full social inclusion, because students are at the centre of all we do.

Provide a range of academic and practical accreditations from Entry Level to GCSE. All students take the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Personal Development Programme.

Offer experiences in the local community, including college placements, work experience and a wide variety of trips and visits. We have formed links with Tate Modern, the Oval and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and others.

Ensure that our students go to college or into work when they leave us; over 5 years, 97% have found appropriate placements.

Our staff are a culturally diverse group with varied experience in primary and secondary mainstream schools, as well as in special schools. The staff is highly supportive, and teachers value the support of teaching assistants, therapists, learning mentors and literacy support specialists. The Leadership Group provides strong support and direction.

The school is a highly popular choice amongst parents, both in Wandsworth and in surrounding authorities. Our funded number has increased over the last year. We are always over-subscribed, and currently have 212 students in 210 funded places.

Relationships in the school are founded on our UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award, which also underpins our Good Behaviour Policy.
