What skills and experience we're looking for

Sir James Smith’s School is seeking to appoint an excellent and highly motivated full time teacher of English to join our well-resourced department. Sir Jim’s is a mixed 11-16 comprehensive, situated on the North Cornish Coast between Bude and Wadebridge, close to stunning beaches and countryside.

The English department has its own suite of rooms, each equipped with an interactive whiteboard and visualiser. The department also has its own dedicated suite of laptops. In addition, the department makes extensive use of the Learning Resource Centre which includes the library, flexible learning space and IT facilities. All teachers are provided with their own laptop.

We seek a teacher committed to ensuring all students make good progress in their learning. The successful candidate will be able to teach consistently engaging lessons tailored to meet the needs of all students. They will be joining a strong team of teachers and a school committed to developing staff and students to their full potential.

We would like you:

  • to be capable of outstanding teaching;
  • to have high expectations of yourself and our students;
  • to be a team player with an abundance of energy and enthusiasm.

What the school offers its staff

The English Department at Sir James Smith’s is creative, hardworking and successful; results are consistently good, and students usually make progress above the national average. The five permanent members of the department have worked hard in creating an engaging shared curriculum at Key Stages Three and Four which has allowed students to make such good progress.

There is a dedicated HLTA within the department who provides timetabled intervention, as well as extensive support both within and outside lessons. We also enjoy good accommodation: a suite of rooms with blackout blinds, as well as a spacious base room where the team can meet and plan collaboratively. All of the rooms are equipped with projectors and a visualiser. We also have a suite of chromebooks for use within the department in addition to wider access to ICT facilities within the school. We are well-resourced with books and textbooks. All teaching staff enjoy the use of both a mini-iPad and laptop. Our medium-term plans and resources are kept in a dedicated SharePoint so they’re easily accessible to all teachers; we believe it’s essential to share, both to ease workload and to ensure the best opportunities for all students.

Commitment to safeguarding

Sir James Smith's School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to all pre-employment checks necessary to meet Safer Recruitment requirements, including a satisfactory enhanced DBS check and references.

Sir James Smith’s is part of North Cornwall Learning Trust. Apart from being a ‘Good’ school, Sir Jim’s is also a great place to work. Visitors, including Ofsted, comment on the friendly and supportive atmosphere. Staff and students are happy and enjoy their time at school. We are a smaller than average co-educational comprehensive school, serving a large rural hinterland in North Cornwall. It’s a fantastic place to live if you like the outdoors. Our extensive rural catchment area of 100 square miles includes 8 partner primary schools though we attract students from many others. The dispersed settlement pattern means approximately 70% of students travel daily by bus. North Cornwall is one of the least sparsely populated areas in England and Wales thanks to the glorious Bodmin Moor. At present we have 30 teachers, and 34 non-teaching staff including 6 technicians, 1 Librarian, 7 clerical assistants and 7 classroom assistants. Governors work closely with staff, as do various support agencies. The small size of the school means that we all know the students very well and staff work together effectively. This is a school on a humane scale where personal relationships matter. We have a "continental day". This means an earlier start - at 8.10 am for staff and 8.25 am for students. Students have one year assembly per week. There are 5 one-hour lessons and 2 breaks of 20 and 30 minutes. The main part of the day ends at 2.30 pm. On Mondays there are meetings; on Wednesdays and Thursdays, extra-curricular activities and late buses; on Fridays many staff go home a little earlier!
