Further details about the role

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

John Ferneley College’s English department is made up of a collaborative team of 11 teachers. We follow Eduqas for our GCSE English Language and Literature and teach ‘mixed ability’ across all year groups. Through English, we provide students with a ‘knowledge rich’ curriculum, packed with engaging texts and topics. All of our units and lessons have been collaboratively planned, so that teachers can adapt and differentiate to suit their own style, and the needs of their classes.

Our aim is to create the very best communicators, readersand writers.

Through English Language, we seek to provide our students with the range and quality of language to allow them to access any future possibilities, also developing on theiroracythrough mature debate and discussion. We strive to provide opportunities that mirror real-life scenarios to allow students to think beyond the content of the classroom.

Through English Literature, our intent is to enrich cultural understanding, consider humanity and to discover the riches of our Literary Heritage. We want all students to broaden their knowledge and to show an appreciation of the world in which they live. These important topics aretherefore reflected in the diverse range of texts that we study. Students will also be encouraged to deepen their critical responses and to have the resources to apply thoughtful evaluation. Using a wide range of high-quality texts, our goal is to promote a love and appreciation of literature and develop a love of reading for enjoyment. Whilst we still consider the content of examinations to be important, our ultimate objective is to provide a curriculum with the skills, concepts and experiences that students will be able to draw from once they embark on their individual journeys after leaving John Ferneley College.
