Our English Department
Our English department is a friendly and supportive team. We have seven teachers, a specialist literacy teaching assistant and a one-to-one tutor. The department is very stable and several members of the team have been in post since 2017 when the school became part of Outwood Grange Academies Trust. We have a combination of experienced and more recently-qualified staff and ECTs are supported by experienced mentors. The department is a great place to start your career as a teacher as well as somewhere where more experienced staff can thrive.
Teaching takes place in the department’s eight classrooms and each member of the department has their own room. Every classroom has a visualiser and these are used extensively by the team. There is a substantial departmental office and a very large and well-stocked library with an experienced and enthusiastic full-time librarian.
The department has created a challenging and exciting KS3 curriculum with reading at its heart. To build enthusiasm for English study at A level, the department has included a ‘love of the subject’ strand to their teaching which includes KS3 units on language change and the history of English, Romantic poetry, and Political and Social Protest writing. The department introduces students to a range of engaging recently-published writing as well as more canonical texts, for example through a fantastic ‘Poets Laureate’ scheme of work containing well-known favourites and quirky, striking choices that provide fresh interest for everyone - including staff!
There is a strong whole-school literacy strategy which aims to ensure that all students can gain the educational and personal benefits of reading. This includes reading in form time, Accelerated Reader and a variety of reading interventions for readers who are not yet proficient. The specialist literacy teaching assistant uses the Ruth Miskin phonics programme to support emergent readers. The team is very proud of the statement made in the most recent inspection report (June 2022), “There is an exceptionally strong reading culture evident across the school.”
As in all OGAT secondary academies, the department prepares students for Eduqas GCSE English Language and English Literature qualifications. The programme of study is fully resourced with high-quality materials produced by staff across the trust who know this specification well. We aim to make all our teachers ‘experts’ in preparing students for GCSE examinations, using our thorough and systematic methods devised over many years. We have the benefit of support from the trust’s team of expert English directors, who provide support, materials, advice, coaching and who model and team-teach in lessons alongside us to develop our expertise. As an indication of our success with all students, they achieve very highly in measures of progress every year.
The academy has a small but high-performing sixth form and the English department prepares students for A level English Language (AQA), A level English Literature (AQA B) and Media Studies (Eduqas). We help students of all abilities to perform well at A level, but are particularly proud of the number we have inspired to pursue their English studies at leading universities.
We look forward to working with you, whether you be an aspiring ECT or an experienced teacher. If you are interested in joining our team, please contact Alice Merriman - Head Of English (a.merriman@easingwold.outwood.com) who would be pleased to tell you more, either by email or telephone, and we would be delighted to welcome you on a visit if you would like to see us in person.
